There is some serious bad mojo associated with the place.
Bad mojo?? You seem to not remember your HISTORY. Where the heck do you think Christopher Columbus landed? It wasn't Miami, or Plymouth Rock it was HISPANOLA aka Haiti & the Dominican Republic. Do you even know why the US was able to complete the Louisiana Purchase?? It was because of the slave revolt agains France IN HAITI. I bet you also think New Orleans got what they deserved also because of their history having voodo and black magic there.

Hmmm . . . I think you should back up that condescension truck before you hurt someone.
You don't consider a history of corruption and violence and never getting it's legs under itself bad mojo?
It's depiction in movies (like Angel Heart and Serpent and the Rainbow) and it's being the center of Caribbean Vodou doesn't lend credence to the bad mojo comment?
I never once said, or feel, that the people deserved this disaster. In fact I have defended American Aid strongly on many fronts. The fact that their own governments history of failure most likely led to the high amount of casualties makes it even more tragic.
So please, saddle that high horse and ride off to scorn someone else.

Sad part is, his Operation Blessing operation will pour lots of aid into Haiti and his boneheaded comments take away from that effort.

In the two threads I've seen regarding the earthquake in Haiti I've seen you make 2 comments the first comment that comes off with a holier than thou attitude and the second you’re appearing to justify your first comment. I have not seen you strongly defend the American Aid as you have stated you’ve done; perhaps you're doing it somewhere else but here, today I have yet to see one ounce of compassion from you towards the Haitian people - rather more I've seen an air of superiority.
There are more things that the United States have in common with Haiti than not in common. Corruption – where do we start? Small town politics? Washington? Major city politics? To clarify I’m using the word politics to cover bribery, kickbacks, police corruption. Voodoo is here in the US - Lousiana, New Orleans, Marie Laveau and her followers are the first that come to mind, however you’ve also got those that practice Satanista in many of the southern states where there is a large Latino population.
A movie is simply that - a movie. Do you actually believe the movies about the history of the United States are historically accurate?
The only thing different between Haiti and the United States is that the United States was able to “get under its legs”. Part of the Haitian government’s failure is a direct result of the international community’s blatant hostility as it did not participate in the lucrative slave trade. Europeans and Euro-Americans would not participate in free trade with the country because of the lack of trust and feeling that people of African descent were inferior. While other countries built industrialized nations Haiti did lag behind because she was cut off by other countries and unable to produce products appropriate to industrialization. While other emancipated territories received assistance from their respective “mother countries” Haiti started out her independence with a huge debt which hindered her development.

bad mojo? hell, we could apply that to anywhere with a history of corruption, a lack of value on life, and no democratic tradition. As for depictions in movies.. unless it is a clear documentary, you are sitting there saying you believe a work of fiction? (because if you do, how did Mickey Rourke get his soul back from Robert DeNiro?)

It's called "Santeria." It's one of the African Diasporic religions, along with Voudoun, Candomble, Ifa, etc. It gets its name from the practice of its early adherents (slaves kidnapped and brought over) in the Americas of syncretizing the African powers (orishas) with Catholic saints, because they would have been beaten and/or killed for honoring them in their original forms.
The original Yoruba, Fa, and Ba-Kongo religions that underlie the African Diasporic traditions do not have a "evil adversary" corresponding to Christianity's "Satan."
And I would call Mr. Robertson a huge stinking heap of human excrement, except I wouldn't want to insult excrement by the comparison.

According to Charity Navigator, about 0.3%. And while I would question why the president of a charity gets over $330,000 in compensation, Charity Navigator gives them a good rating.

Please don't think I'm defending Pat Robertson or his comments. I'm not. I can't stand him. In fact Charity Navigator's rating of Robertson's Christian Broadcasting Network isn't stellar. But I have to admit that Operation Blessing does a lot of good.

because he has "the light of Jesus shining from his eyes", and gullible rubes, old ladies, and other assorted hoople-heads are drawn to that light w/out any thought or understanding that they are hearing the rantings of a man, not the actual message of Christ when he speaks; and it warms that little empty corner of their soul in ways that surpass understanding by people with an IQ above room temperature.

no, because I refuse to wish him anything other than a speedy trip up to the gates, a chance to view the instant replay of the look on his face when he finds out his message really wasn't what Christianity was about, and the view of him on a very speedy trip to hell. And saying something like that in a Sail On thread doesn't go over well.
