BALTIMORE – Is this tradition "nevermore"?
A mysterious visitor who left roses and cognac at the grave of Edgar Allan Poe each year on the writer's birthday failed to show early Tuesday, breaking with a ritual that began more than 60 years ago.
"I'm confused, befuddled," said Jeff Jerome, curator of the Poe House and Museum. "I don't know what's going on."

my guess is that the mystery visitor died sometime in the last year.

That's what my thought was. But it also could be he/she is in the Hospital or some other kind of a delay.

My first thought was death, too. Then my second thought was "Hey, I do this for my own personal fulfillment, and now I got a bunch of lookyloos acting like Linus waiting for the Great Pumpkin to show up? Gimme a break! I'll be back next week when no one expects me." I mean the reason of doing something mysteriously is so 200 people won't be watching you do it.

I'm betting the mystery person will be back next year. Maybe not the same one though.
I've thought about this just a bit and if it were me doing this all these years I would have
brought someone into the secret with the idea that when I passed they would continue the
tradition.

here is hoping this is how it plays out. The Baltimore Sun has a bit more coverage, including a quote that someone was "annoyed" that it didn't happen like it does traditionally.

Probably next year there will be a bunch of people who do it, figuring the original "Poe-ette" has passed on.
you like that? Poe-ette? Just came up with that. "Tonight, live on stage, Edgar and the Poe-ettes." I crack myself up.

Thought about doing that too. If he fails to show this year, next year is going to be a zoo w/ new folks restarting the tradition

Perhaps a new tradition ... leaving a bouquet of black-eyed susans
and a six-pack of Natty Boh here (Timonium, just north of Baltimore) every year.
Sadly Johnny Unitas died on September 11th, 2002
on the one year anniversary of the *9/11* terrorist attacks.

I bet the person probably figured out everybody would be waiting for them to show up, so they figured they would do it another day.
Or they're dead.

Whoever it is has been doing this for 60 years now. I think they know people are watching. The thing is they have always kept a respectful distance and not tried to uncover the identity of the person. So I doubt they would change their ways now.

and the sad thing is that when they had a chance, the commission in charge of the stadium the Ravens play in blew it in not naming it for Johnny U.

I'm thinking the person went to their grave and nobody knew it was them. I'm also willing to bet someone takes up the tradition next year.

At the risk of being hammered big time......
I imagine that when the time comes, one year to the day after JB passes
there won't be just one person show up and leave something behind
(Tequila comes to mind) But so many that a new tradition will be born.
Hope there's a good parking lot for the tailgate party.
