when you don't have a floppy drive anymore? I trid a magic spell, but that didn't work, so I figure there's probably a more productive way
In unpacking, I find that I have like, DOZENS, of floppy discs that have pictures and various documents on them. Don't care so much about the stuff other than pics. Problem is, I no longer have a floppy drive. Does anyone know of some neato little "coverter" device I could plug into my laptop to get the stuff off the floppies and save it elsewhere?
Thoughts? Opinions? Have some cwaffee and tawl amongs yaselves. Thanks for your help!

Maybe the computers at the local library still have floppy disks, and you could move them to a flash drive? They do make portable usb floppy drives you could buy, but the expense doesn't seem worth it. Our library just needs to do a virus scan on any disks you bring in, then you're all set.
I have an old lap top that ain't good for nuthin' (too big, battery won't hold a charge, not enuff memory...)(jeez, I just described myself! ) but it has a floppy drive so I use it to read the discs and then save the data to a thumbdrive . . .

I appreciate the idea, but we're talking DOZENS of floppies with I don't even know what on them...I'd be LIVING at the libary.

ummm..which "thing" on that page are you talking about?
i would think any of the first four would work, but maybe someone more techy than me could make a better recomendation about which brand, etc i know iomega is decent, but it is also the most expensive

I'm guessing the external floppy drives...looks like there are 4 of them on that page. Might be your best bet if you can't find some geek friends with external floppies (errrr, drives, that is. ) and you dont' want to spend your life if the library.

You're probably right, but if there are that many disks it might cost more than just buying a floppy drive...plus then there's that whole issue of not knowing *what* is on the disks... I'd suggest doing a search on amazon and various computer "stuff" sites and reading reviews and seeing where you can get on the cheapest. Maybe Walmart sells them? or Ebay?

I just love you, Mel!
(blush) I don't know what to say, BEG, that's the nicest thing a USC fan has ever said to me!
Although Mrs SPH went to UCLA and Univ of Colorado, and every once in a while she slips and says something nice....!

thrift stores... they have old (usable) computers
cost about $20 then after you figure out you want to keep
some of the stuff, the other options are available
it might help you cull the herd as it were..
Better yet find a phriend of yours who still has a floppy drive. Cost = $0 other than some time. From there you can put it on whatever media you want, CD, USB flash drive or whatever. Good luck.
