Got any more on that one? That's cool as hell!!!!! Thing about Soviet technology......practical, but overbuilt as all gitout.rmissbrook wrote:In my quest to understand about "boat planes" I found some more interesting ones.
The UGLY plane was project by the Russians to fight Polaris submarines in the 50's and 60's. Never finished so this one is just sitting in a field somewhere in Russia.

Re: Dumb question about boat planes
Those are the Beriev A-40. Neat airplane.
Ekranoplanes are designed to fly in ground effect.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ground_effect_vehicle
Not technically an airplane, as they don't "fly" as such. They're limited to flying just off the surface of the water. Speed is the issue.

In the Photo section of Buffettnews, there is a picture of the Grumman Goose in Jimmy Buffett's Hanger in Sag Harbor, NY. I used to see this plane all the time when I would drive by there on my way back from Montauk.

I had forgotten about that picture. I just checked and it was posted in September, 2007 so this would be the old Goose. They were originally military equipment to rapidly get men and equipment across bodies of water like the capsian sea......they were also used as high speed ferries..... ture that they only operate in the ground effect zone, but that does count as flying.....

So could they only fly like that over water? If so why isn't it called "water effect flying?"Dutch Harbor PH wrote:rmissbrook wrote:Both videos are cool. Re: Dumb question about boat planes
Remember we had a whole discussion several days ago. He got a "different" goose in 2009. The picture of the goose in the hanger was taken in 2007, so that would be the old, old goose. And the one he has now would be the new, old goose since it was made in 1939.HurricaneSeason wrote:Old Goose? I thought that was the 'new one'. It's called "Ground Effect" because it can happen over any surface and was fist studied over the ends of runways when Planes would come within 1/2 to 1/4 of ther wingspan to the ground.....For "Ground Effect" to be Effective, you need a fairly smooth unbroken surface....Water is the perfect medium for large distances since you dont have hioll amnd dale to contend with.....

If you go to Google Maps they still show up at the naval base in Kaspiysk, on the Caspian Sea. Click here to view.rmissbrook wrote:Are they still in use today? Compare the size of the large one (the Lun, one of two believed to have been built) to the ships in the harbor with it. Note also the smaller ekranoplan — probably one of the A-90 Orlyonok models — on the shore to the left of the harbor.

Well that is really impressive. Do we think those planes are really being used everyday or are they just sitting there?

Re: Dumb question about boat planes
Well, here is just what Jimmy needs: an Ekranoplan Yacht. He likes tree top flying. This is just a little lower but you sure could spot fish.
http://www.yachtboutique.com/Designers/ ... noplan.htm
Perhaps the most exciting feature of the Gemini is its ability to fly right into a remote deserted beach or island at low speeds allowing for the dry desembarkment of the owners and guests. The entire nose tilts open for easy deployment of two large off-road vehicles (bring your Hummer), cars or whatever toys you want. A transom garage holds one large tender, which is deployed by a ramp, so on the way back, all you have to do is speed up the tender to jump right into the garage. Have fun guys!

Cool Picture!!!....Notice how the front Jet engines are angled to enhance the effect at low speeds by directing the jet wash down below the wing....
