I haven't been on BN in awhile as well but my thoughts to all of those who may be affected by this. Scary stuff. I was complaining about all the snow we just got but in the big picture it's pretty petty considering what is going on from Haitti to Chile to everywhere in the Pacific.

Re: Earthquake in Chile; Tsunami warnings in Pacific
My oldest keet got facebooked this morning.....her host family (she lived in Santiago) are all well and her best friend from high school is fine but they are trying to figure a way to get out.
The keet said while she lived there, they had minor earthquakes but rarely did they have damage. One thing about the Chilean people.......they had really strict building codes. That probably saved untold amount of lives.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Pinot Noir in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "WOO HOO"

More bad news: a tsunami hit the coast of Chile. Most of the folks in those were not warned about it.

Re: Earthquake in Chile; Tsunami warnings in Pacific
We FINALLY heard from Rick's aunt in Santiago! We actually knew both his sister and aunt were ok on Sunday night, but didn't know where or what they were enduring. Just got this email from his uncle who is still up in IN:Karacal wrote:wDs!dnw wrote:((((((((Jen)))))))), glad you are safe. Sheree, heard anything? Linda, glad your daughter's host family is safe. Hi Everyone,
I'm sorry I did not respond as quickly as I should have. Here's what I went
through. I felt the bed jerk at 3:37 am on Sat. Then my niece called
me from her bedroom to get up and head for the door. We needed to get
out of the building. The electricity went off before the quake was
felt by us. We were in total darkness and felt our way outside. That
may not sound too hard until you get jerked around by the quake a few
times. Although it seemed like an eternity the quake lasted only three
minutes.
We are fine but without water. A minor inconvenience. The building
suffered no major damage - Thank God! There are so many who are
sleeping in tents because of structural damage to their homes or fear
of another quake. We continue to have tremors and they are scary too.
Many folks don't have water or electricity.
The school is closed due to the earthquake. I was there with staff,
students and parents helping to repair and clean it. Most of the damage
was superficial. Bookcases collapsed or toppled over - books in the
library were everywhere. There were guys rebuilding them today. There
was some ceiling tile laying on the floor. Books and other things on
the floors in most every classroom. The art and chemistry labs were a
mess. There were lots of workers and things looked pretty good today.
The school may reopen on Wed. if enough of the students have water and
electricity at their homes.
Now for me personally. You know I am not a teacher by trade. Well, I
just spent 20 hours writing lesson plans for Algebra, World History and
US History. I just wanted somebody to shoot me and put me out of my
misery. Next I have to set up the grade book and start grading papers!
I have
had three days in class and I'm already grateful for an earthquake so I
can get out of school! Am I pathetic or what!
For my running friends. On Sunday I ran the foothills of the Andes.
It was 70 degrees and sunny with just a little breeze. What a view!
Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.
Love,
Sarah
Thanks all for your concern!
{{hugs}}

The step-daughter of a former co-worker of mine runs a food and wine tour business in Santiago. She (Liz Caskey) has been keeping friends and family posted on what's happening in Chile on her Blog page.

Good read! Thanks. I didn't know that..."Chile was ranked by Travel & Leisure magazine as the sixth hottest destination in the world."JollyMon66 wrote:The step-daughter of a former co-worker of mine runs a food and wine tour business in Santiago. Re: Earthquake in Chile; Tsunami warnings in Pacific
Just read this as we just got back late on Thursday night
Jen wish I had known you were so close.
We were evacuated from the Moana Surfrider and spent 4 hours in the parking garage at the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani.
Glad it was no worse than it was. We were supposed to be getting on the Pride of America anytime after 12:30, but it ended up being after 6 and we did not sail until 11:30.
It is such a beautiful area and the devastation would have been so sad to see.
Take care.
