Powerful 8.8 earthquake on coast of Chile. Early reports say there's major damage. There's also potential for significant tsunami throughout the Pacific Basin; entire Pacific under a tsunami warning.

A 1960 earthquake in the same area generated the tsunami that hit Hilo, Hawaii, killing 61 people.

Considering I'm sitting one block from the ocean on Oahu, not sure how much sleep is happening tonight...

Many good thoughts to the people of Chile and anyone in the path of potential tsunami.

Watching CNN, it's not looking too good for the Pacific coast of South America. Hopefully Mid-Pac and West-Pac will be okay.

*edit* No such luck.... entire Pacific under a tsunami warning. See link above in my first post.

Local TV says evacuations will start early in the morning. Time to catch some sleep then head for high ground.

I was just reading this when I got up.

I was glad that we weren't in Hawaii this month. Now I'm horrified to find out you are. Also my nephew and his family including a 3 month old also live a short way from the beach in Honolulu.

Stay safe Jen!

Nancy, there should be plenty of time to get everyone to high ground. Sirens are supposed to go off at 6AM and the first waves are estimated to arrive about 11:15. Thought I'd get some sleep but that's not been as easy as expected. :o

I can well imagine!

I know that they have plans in place for this.....I've seen the tsunami evacuation route signs as we traveled about...especially last month when we were on the Big Island. The last big one hit there in the 1960's and wiped out a park where there was a school group visiting

Knowing how the traffic is on a "normal" day in Honolulu I can imagine what it will be like when everyone hits the road at the same time.

It sounds like they are going to keep people on higher floors in the hotels rather than evacuate them. Personally, I'd get out of Dodge or maybe it would be incentive for me to finally climb Diamondhead!

Someone is walking through the neighborhood blowing a conch shell and there's lots of movement out there. People are waking up well ahead of the sirens and putting evacuation plans into motion.

OK Glad to here everyone is getting the word there early. I know it's only 3:21 there. (Is it wrong to have Honolulu time displayed on my phone??)

I love the conch shell idea....How appropriate.

I have to hit the road....but you guys will be in my thoughts today. Stay safe!

Tell you what, I don't think that siren would have woken me up if I hadn't already been awake. Just to add insult to people trying to move valuables, etc, it's poruing rain here on the windward side. :-?

Loooong lines at grocery stores and gas stations.

Hilo airport is closed, Honolulu still open at this point.
