I don't know about the rest of the country, but up here in the Boston area we are being inundated with TV ads for Key West and not just on the Travel Channel. What's that all about? Is the area hurting for visitors?

The economy has even affected the conch republic. Crabby Dicks has closed and building is still empty.

We were in Key West Jan 6-12...it was brutally cold and windy at around 50 degrees during the day; 30 degrees at night....not many people were outdoors but at that temperature, who cares to walk around with the cold slapping you in the face....we stopped at Margaritaville where there were not many shoppers or people in the restaurant...had hoped to run into JB but I believe he was at Tahiti!!!! With the economy in such a sad state of affairs, no one can afford to travel.....hopefully when everyone gets
their income tax refund, they will be out and about traveling again....especially at Key West where the sunsets are beautiful at Mallory Square......and the entertainers are divine!!
stay warm everyone!!!

No one? You traveled.
So did my hubby and I this month to Mexico.. so did several folks to see JB NOT in their own state in the last few weeks.
Oh, and yeah. We're getting the KW ads here in CO, too.

There was an artical in our paper recently why even though there are only 28 days in this month why it seemed to go soooo slow. It was because of the weather. Weather did hit Kdubs hard this winter. It had a huge impact on us all. We still got tourists. But we could not get them to spend money. I do not blame them either. Who wants to go out on the water when it is 50 degrees and raining.
It also hit our own attitudes and not just our pockets. If it feels cold for you ... imagine how it feels for us !! Most of us do not have heat in our homes and have very thin walls. We shiver ourselves to sleep under eight blankets while wearing seven layers.
Whether you are a tourist or a local... the attitude is the same. Bring out the SUN ! Tourist want it to go out and have fun.... we want it so we can take you out to have fun and make some money
We did hit a lot of record lows this winter. Despite the long hard winter in Cayo Hueso. I will say this. At least I never once scrapped ice of my windshield.
For those of you coming down...It should be back to normal around mid March. Lets hope for sooner though.

I used to live in Key West. Over the past decade, the people that run the resorts, hotels, spas, boutiques, and every other f*cking thing I hate down there has priced themselves out of the market. Most people who spend 2 minutes doing a google search realize that for far less money anyone can go to an all inclusive resort in Mexico or the Islands or hop on a cruise ship for a week and get way more for your dollar then getting to Key West and staying there. 9 out of 10 people go to Key West to drink and fish. The bars that offer dollar beers and the laid back lifestyle will thrive forever. The 5 star posh eye sore hotels can just fall into the ocean and nobody should care. They have ruined Key West . . . and made it so most people can't afford to go.

Unfortunately I've only been going to Key West in recent years so I have very limited experience. Your having lived there gives you a unique perspective and I can understand your dismay......
Sadly, those same statements can be used to describe far too many other communities and vacation spots here and abroad. The price of tourism and progress, right?

When E and I were there on our honeymoon in 2007, I enjoyed drinking at Don's bar @ 1000 Truman Ave just about more than anything.

And it was SO NOT anything fancy or touristy.

Hell, it's where I discovered Three Olives vodka.
