When did "No Bird Flies by my Window" become "Lone Palm"
Tonight as I was cruising home from work (ha!) I was listening to the 11-20-1999 Sag Harbor concert that Jimmy did as a benefit. He starts telling a story about the Neville Brothers and how he came to write a song called "No Bird Flies by my Window." Since I still consider myself very much a novice as far as Jimmy's book of music is concerned I was thrilled to think I was going to hear a new song I had not heard before.
Well what to my wondering ears did appear but the song that today is known as "Lone Palm"! What's up with that????? This concert was the last time he played it in public according to the song lyric database. But then it appears as "Lone Palm" on Fruitcakes. So does anyone know the story behind the name change?

It's listed in the setlist from the Sag Harbor Concert as "Lone Palm", and the lyric database doesn't list a "No Bird Flies By my Window". Perhaps Jimmy used "No Bird..." as a working title as he wrote it or was working out the arrangement, but then decided on "Lone Palm" as the permanent title... ![noeyedear-shrugging [smilie=noeyedear-shrugging.gif]](./images/smilies/noeyedear-shrugging.gif)

It was in Where Is Joe Merchant a couple of times I think as well as the cover and I recall reading in the data base somewhere before 1994 that he played it, perhaps the Lizard or Jump Up tour in a couple of places. The reference to the Nevilles would make that 1989/90 time accurate since the Nevilles opened up for him on the Lizard tour.
Oh yeah - Fruitcakes was in a different key back when he did it in 1992 on WLUP in Chicago. It was way more laidback. I still have that on tape somewhere. I hope anyway. I have yet to find it. I'm still searching. I have the Corona Extra commercial, three mixes of it, that I'm going to put on CD at some point but I really hope to find the Fruitcakes performance.

At the Sag Harbor concert in 1999 he tells the story of he and the Neville Brothers being in Cincinnati. They were staying in a not so great motel with a log of construction going on. He walked into one of the Nevilles' room (can't remember which one) and the windos was over looking the construction site. The Neville brother said, "Man, no bird would fly by that window." And he got the idea for the two chairs from watching people sit in two empty chairs on a beach by a restaurant where he was eating.C-Dawg wrote:It's listed in the setlist from the Sag Harbor Concert as "Lone Palm", and the lyric database doesn't list a "No Bird Flies By my Window". Anyway, he definitely introduces it as "No Bird Flies by my Window." So the name got changed sometime after November, 1999.

I would be real interested in that, if/when you find it.....HurricaneSeason wrote:Oh yeah - Fruitcakes was in a different key back when he did it in 1992 on WLUP in Chicago. It was way more laidback. I still have that on tape somewhere. I hope anyway. I have yet to find it. I'm still searching.

Let's see...the song came out in 1994 and the name of it was finally changed in 1999? So he changed it after it was released. OK.

I'm well aware of the story, I have a copy of the show and have heard it a few times...I was just saying that a song can be known by 2 titles...rmissbrook wrote:At the Sag Harbor concert in 1999 he tells the story of he and the Neville Brothers being in Cincinnati. Well a lot of songs he introduces with 'other' titles, like Manana, which he used to say "Please Don't Say Manana If You Don't Mean It" etc...

Data base here shows this, which goes with the whole Nevilles opening act time line:
December 5th, 1989
December 5th, 1989
