I didn't find a current thread on this topic so I thought I'd put this out there. I love Skynyrd but they gotta go with Buffett......

ALABAMA EXPOSURE: Morrow wants new state song for Alabama

Is Alabama's state song going to be “Sweet Home Alabama” or “Stars Fell on Alabama?”
State Rep. Johnny Mack Morrow, D-Red Bay, played versions of both at last week's House Tourism and Travel Committee and challenged committee attendees to sing the praises of both songs. He wants one to be used to help promote Alabama as a tourist destination.
Jimmy Buffett, a Mobile native, sings “Stars Fell on Alabama” and that's the version of the 1934 song that Morrow played. The “Sweet Home Alabama” version he played was Lynyrd Skynyrd's version.
“Most (other states) have state songs,” Morrow said. Noting that Alabama has a current state song that fourth graders learn in elementary school, Morrow said that he wants to elevate it to the state anthem. The state song is “Alabama,” with words by Julia S. Tutwiler and music by Edna Gockel-Gussen.
“We're not doing away with Julia Tutwiler,” Morrow said. “I want to elevate it to the state anthem.”
Morrow has legislation to change “Alabama” to the state anthem and name a new state song. “We're very competitive with other states and we need a state song,” Morrow said.

Please let me be the first to say that these guys really need to look around at all the things that need to be done and drop this type of thing until they get a few of the really important things done.
Fun is fun but right is right.
Washington State had a swipe at this a few years ago with Louie Louie.
Didn't happen here, probably won't happen there.
Just my two cents.

well, the image of, "Hustlin' 'round Montgomery in their alligator shoes, gettin' drunk every weekend at the BBQs" probably isn't the best for stimulating tourism...

Well that could be true, in some instances. But we are a lot more than just the cliche's put on us by the rest of the world. Aaaaaaah who am I kidding? Alabama the state sucks but there are some mighty fine people here. We are not all stuck in the pre civil rights era. Modern Alabama would blow you away if everyone could get away from the preconcieved notions. We are broke, we do speak slowly but we are not illiterate and yes our legislature does like to throw stupid bills like this up so that they can say that they had X number of bills pass which is why we haven't been able to do anything on that important bill.... But with a Republican ran government there is only so much you can do without the 1st Baptist churches consent.
By the way what song can I listen to to make me want to load up the truck and head to Pennsylvania for a good time?
There might be a connection there. 1/2 inch of snow makes us call out the national guard, I'm putting on a shorty neoprene suit and dropping the boat back in the lake so I can go skiing again. (It's been a long time since I put it up on Thanksgiving). I know I'm getting a late start but hey I'm getting older so cut me some slack. Even though it is a warm weather climate we have Mentone which is the Southernmost Snow ski resort in the Continental USA....and when its not cold enough to make snow its a golf course.
Yeah I love it here and I want to invite you to come down and enjoy it too.
The first drinks on me.

Thirty two teeth in a jawbone
Alabama cryin for none
Before I have to hit him
I hope he's got the sense to run
Reason those poor girls love him
Promise them anything
Reason they believe him
He wears a big diamond ring
Alabama getaway
Alabama getaway
Only way to please me
Turn around and leave
and walk away
Majordomo Billy Bojangles
Sit down and have a drink with me
What's this about Alabama
Keeps comin back to me?
Heard your plea in the courthouse
Jurybox began to rock and rise
Forty-nine sister states all had
Alabama in their eyes
Alabama getaway
Alabama getaway
Only way to please me
Turn around and leave
and walk away
Why don't we just give Alabama
rope enough to hang himself?
Ain't no call to worry the jury
His kind takes care of itself
Twenty-third Psalm Majordomo
reserve me a table for three
in the Valley of the Shadow
just you, Alabama and me
Alabama getaway
Alabama getaway
Only way to please me
turn around and leave
and walk away

Suppose "That Smell" by Skynard was right out...

I said that about Skynrd because one night at a show this lady came up and asked me "Will you do 'Sweet Home Alabama'? Y'all are from Alabama! Do 'Sweet Home Alabama'!"
And so, in one of millions of reasons for not doing songs like that, I told her "They are from Florida, not Alabama. And we're not doing that song. We don't do that song and we won't do that song."
Ringling said something about Randy Newman's song. I said I wouldn't go that far meaning, ha ha, just wait, someone's dumb enough and will suggest it.

Alabama, like the name, Alabama The Beautiful, is a natural wonder, Beaches on one end, Mountains on the other, 4 colorful seasons, and so much more. Sweet Home is such a great song, (does it matter where they came from) Stars, Jimmy's version is such a classic, but Jimmy is from Mississippi, but we do have LuLu's and Jimmy does claim Mobile, both boost the spirits of all that hear. Then we have the group, Alabama, most of them are from Alabama, and they sing My Home's In Alabama. Not saying a State song is needed, but Any of these songs, if you have a love for the State and the people, would be fine with me.
