Man jogging on beach killed by airplane

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - A 38-year-old father of two was jogging and listening to his iPod when he was hit from behind and killed by a small plane making an emergency landing on the beach, officials said Tuesday. Robert Gary Jones of Woodstock, Ga., was killed instantly on Hilton Head Island on Monday evening, said Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen.

The single-engine plane had lost its propeller and the pilot's vision was blocked by oil on the windshield, Allen said.

Jones was married and had two children, the coroner said.

"Apparently he did not see nor hear the plane," Allen said. "The plane was basically gliding."

Hilton Head fire and rescue spokeswoman Joheida Fister said the identities of the pilot and a passenger on the Experimental Lancair IV-P plane were not released. The two were not injured.

The plane started leaking oil at about 13,000 feet and tried originally to make it to Hilton Head Airport, Fister said.

The oil on the windshield blocked the pilot's vision and he told authorities the propeller came off the plane. When he tried to land on the beach near the Hilton Head Marriott Resort and Spa, the plane hit the jogger and came to rest a little farther down the beach, she said.

"I would have to say it's pretty unusual," Fister said.

FAA records show the aircraft was registered to Edward I. Smith of Chesapeake, Va., with a certificate issued in 2004. Smith has a private pilot's license, according to FAA records. Nobody answered early Tuesday at a phone number listed for Smith and a message was not immediately answered.

The plane left Orlando at 4:45 p.m. and was headed for Virginia, Fister said. The four-seater plane has a turbine engine, can be built from a kit and can fly up to 370 mph, according to the Lancair Web site. The IV-P model has a pressurized cabin.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were investigating, Fister said.

An FAA spokeswoman referred inquiries to the NTSB.

That is just BS. Poor guy is taking care of himself so he can be around longer for his kids and gets his lunch.
Things sometimes are just plane wrong. (or plain?)

Yikes! All I've been worried about are sharks and jellyfish. Now I'm going to be paranoid about planes.

It would be horribly ironic if the poor guy was a big fan of LOST.

I thought for sure this was going to be someone jogging on St Jean Beach in St Barts, at least there you're warned the beach is right at the end of the runway but people still risk it

Sad.

So horrific and sad...

But I do have to say, this is a warning for all who turn the volume on their ipods up way too loud. How could he not hear that plane? When I ride my bike the volume on my shuffle is low enough that I can still hear all the traffic around me. I am constantly amazed when I cross paths with someone whose mp3 player is so loud I can hear it. In Dec. at baggage claim in LAX I was standing on the other side of the carousel from a kid who had his iPod on so loud that I could repeat the lyrics of the rap crap he was listening to...and his parents were right there! WTF? It doesn't take much to permanently damage your hearing. Perhaps I should have pursued my degee in audiology instead of speech...plenty of job security there. :-?

The article I read said the plane had engine troubles, so it was gliding. And his windshield was covered in oil. Bad set of circumstances, but I can see how it could happen.

People have been hit by cars while cranking their ipods and I'm sure people have been assualted because they could not hear the culprit sneaking up.
It was only a matter of time until a plane took someone out.

If, as the article states, the plane was gliding, you wouldn't hear anything from the plane. And depending on how close to a road, he made have heard engine noises and thought that they were coming from the road.
