Either Barometer Soup or Banana Wind, in my opinion.

I know it's a "greatest hits" but I think "Meet Me In Margaritaville".
If you want to give a newbie the "live" feel I think I like the Mansfield disk of a few years ago.

I started one of my best friends with the yellow album, but that was many many moons ago. Right now I'd choose MMIM. To get the feel of the concert I'd just record one of the shows off Margaritaville.
Well...(said in my best Bubba voice) I've been on sabbatical.

Boats, Beaches, Bars, and Ballads. It's got a nice collection of the original stuff and supposedly a bonus track on each that's not on any other CD. If this works for you, then you can expand from there and you'll have progressed from the yellow favs.

Any of the "Live in Hawaii/Fenway/Anguilla" albums with the CD/DVD combo, or if you're lucky the 1986 "Live by the Bay" VHS tape. This way, they get a multi-media introduction to both Jimmy as well as the Parrothead phenomenon.
The 1990 "Feeding Frenzy" album is a good one, too.
For a 'total immersion' type of introduction, I would recommend the box set.

Anguilla or Hawaii. Probably the two I listen to the most.

I agree with all of year. I have a soft spot in my heart for the yellow album. Though I never listen to it anymore, we all know that it was that album that opened up a whole new horizon of music!!
I'm back to livin' Floridays

Re: best cd to start a new parrothead on?
I think the Yellow Album is good because it has all the songs people know and recognize. My personal opinion is the Live at Fenway cd or the Live at Wrigley Field cd. It has most of the songs everybody knows but also has a good mixture of stuff people don't know who may be a first time listener. i.e, Piece of Work, Coast of Carolina, La Vie Dansante etc.

Jimmy's singing isn't the best on live performances, IMHO.

Re: best cd to start a new parrothead on?
My first new CD was Fruitcakes. I had listened to Jimmy thanks to a friend who was a huge Parrothead. I was already hooked on A Pirate Looks At Forty, One Particular Harbor, Son of a Son of a Sailor, and and pretty much anything on the yellow album. But Fruitcakes really opened my eyes. Even though I know it's a Grateful Dead song, Uncle John's Band was simply an amazingly FUN song! Not to mention how great were the songs Fruitcakes, Everybody's Got a Cousin, Lone Palm (still one of my favs), Delaney Talks To Statues, Love In The Library...hell, there's not a bad song on the CD.
It's one of the few CDs I can put in and jam to the entire thing. Most of Jimmy's other CDs (minus the live/greatest hits CDs) have 1-3 songs that just don't get into and will end up skipping.

If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
Life is short, live long!!
I'd rather be a wiseass than a dumbass.
