Phin power needed for my community, please!

Post by IrishPirate »

Some of you may have read or heard about the tragic event of the two teenage girls who committed suicide by getting hit by an Acela Train. They were 16 & 15(her 16th birthday was the following week), beautiful, young girls who had just gone to their "Soph" the previous Saturday. As time past, reasons as to why they decided to die began to surface. One of the girl's boyfriend was killed in a car/bike accident, as he rode his bike home from school, one month before the girls death. The girls were so distraught by his death that they entered into a suicide pact with another girl and planned their deaths. The third girl changed her mind and did not jump in front of the oncoming train, instead she screamed at her friends to get off the tracks and watched them embrace each other as the train hit them at approximately 150 miles an hour. I was the third girls "lunch Mom" for grade school and I can't believe she was involved in this. She was such a happy kid! Now she is hospitalized in the psych ward, on suicide watch.
Today, we learned that another child from the same school, has taken his life by hanging himself in the garage where his band practiced.
There are rumors that there is a suicide pact that is encompassing three area high schools. It seems to be true! My son Tyler was friends with the girls and knew the boy. These children were 3 of 6 friends that Tyler has lost to suicide this year. The entire community is reeling in this nightmare! WHY, WHY, WHY????? What are we doing to our children that they consider this desperate measure and invite others to come along for the ride????? More importantly, what can we do to stop it???? Please, pray for my community and its children.

This is just horrific. I hope that parents will take the opportunity to really talk to their kids and make sure all is well with them...and get them the help they need if not. :( :( :(

Dear heavens what a nightmare!

What I'll never understand is why suicide seems to be "contagious" among teens. There is usually a spate of them after one. When a child see the agony a suicide causes to friends and family, why on earth would they decide to put their family/friends through more of the same. It is just unfathomable to me.

A dear friend's sister hung herself last Thanksgiving. I'll have a hard time forgiving her for the heartache she caused her family. I know she must have been in pain....but others have survived much worse than she was facing. It is the most cruel thing you can do and the pain never ends for those left behind.

Prayers going out for everyone involved.

It's much harder on kids today than it was when we were kids. I'm not entirely sure why, but just watching my own kids, it's true. Add "impulsive" to "stressed out" and it can be an awful mix. :( :(

Some of the best advice I ever got from a doctor: "If you suspect your teenager/young adult is depressed or having other mental health issues, it's a medical emergency just as much as a broken bone or a wide open cut needing 50 stitches. Get help immediately - today. Teenagers can quickly make poor, irrevocable decisions."

More prayers for your town and all our kids, IP. :(

Like I posted on your FB page - it just makes you want to sit on your child until this tragic time in your community passes.

Prayers for the whole community and that the children soom realize that bad things will pass and death won't.

What a terribly sad thing!

For teenagers, the world is a very different place than it is for us adults. Things get blown out of proportion easily and seem like the biggest thing on earth at the time, when, in reality, they are merely a bump in the road. Delicate, fragile egos, wanting to fit in, wanting to be liked, and wanting to not stick out. Their perspective is different than ours, and their sense of time is different than ours. Everything gets magnified beyond reality.

I work with teens, and see this fragility all the time. Hold them close, watch them closely, and talk with them, even if they see you as an interfering adlult.

Suicide clusters are far too common--there was one at my alma mater a few years ago, and one at a major university right now. Again, fitting in, being like the others, and losing perspective on a world that is, at its best, a little crazy.

I have no words, I will keep those families in my prayers.

I've been in several community theatre shows that had a fair amount of teens in them. Every thought had to be expressed at the exact moment they were having it no matter how trivial. Every perceived slight from one of their peers caused tears and taking sides and silent treatment.
I don't have kids so it was a real experience for me to see it. I do recall the days when a run in your stocking or a badly placed zit was a disaster, so it's no wonder that today's more complex problems turn out to be a final straw. I do think that there is a certain air of "romance" to suicide for some of these kids too - I think that somehow they don't equate the dramatic action with actually being dead.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers! Please keep them coming!!!! The community as a whole is on pins and needles anticipating, when will the next one happen, who will it be, will I know them. . . . will it be my kid and how can we stop it?????
I have five kids and I know how dramatic their teen years are. My own kids expressed thoughts of suicide, one even attempted it. (So easy for a diabetic to just over dose insulin) We talked, we prayed, we got help. My niece took her life two years ago. So this is all hitting too close to home for me. I'm angry. I'm scared. I'm sad. I'm confused. I'm an adult who is capable of dealing with it. I'm worried for the children who aren't capable and their parents who are oblivious to their kids distress. I do keep a tight reign on my kids(sit on them) I know where they are, who they're with and how they are getting from point A to Z. And we talk, whether they want to or not. They may hate me for it, now, but someday(God willing)they'll thank me for it and do the same with their kids.
