Tiki bar care
Sorry guys-tries doing a search and it took too long-just looking for ideas to care for a bamboo tiki bar. Trying to make the wood and thatch last a couple of summers
I want to go back to the island,
Where the shrimp boats tie up to the pilin'.
Give me oysters and beer for dinner ev'ry day of the year

Re: Tiki bar care
We built our Tiki Hut in 2009 out of treated lumber and then painted it with good outdoor paint in a nice variety of colors. We put a roof on it with roofing lumber and then covered that with roofing paper then added a layer of thatch purchased from Forever Bamboo. What we have discovered this Spring is that the west facing thatch has taken a beating from the strong westerly winds we have experienced all season long as these cold fronts come from the west across the Gulf coast. The thatch in that area has dried out considerably, most likely because it gets the most sun exposure. Now our roof has a couple of large bald spots. The other three sides of the roof look to be holding out better.
I am not sure if it makes a difference, but purchasing the more expensive fire retardant thatch may hold up better in these conditions.

This is a pic of the westward facing side before we lost the thatch.

I have cracks in my bamboo from this horrible winter weather. What I read was that you can just wipe down the bamboo with water and a light detergent. I'll then have to get some wire and wrap it around the cracks and twist it until it closes the crack.

For those of you wanting a few ideas on construction materials -
I've used PVC pipe that I've painted which can simulate bamboo in some tiki bars I've built. For roofing, I always use the plastic lattice. You can buy the stuff in all sorts of colors and it doesn't fall apart like wooden lattice. I do continue to look for a durable grass materials for the roof and still haven't found something I like. For an indoor bar - the simple table skirts they sell at places like Party City work great and they are cheap but they won't hold up to strong winds or harsh weather.
Here's a shot of a tiki bar I built over the winter. I used plastic lattice, PVC, and a cheap grass table skirt that has been trimmed for the roof. Keep in mind that this is "portable" and will be moved in and out of the garage for parties.

After you repair the bamboo with the wire you can hide the wire with Sea Grass rope. You can find the stuff at places like The Oriental Trading Company (on line or catalog)Seas in my veins wrote:I have cracks in my bamboo from this horrible winter weather. My favorite place for supplies. Huge assortment of stuff. Download their PDF file catalog. I'm lucky, they are local to me but they do ship anywhere, I think.

Salukulady! Thank you for the link. Best prices on rainscape thatch we've found. Better than Bamboo Forever. We'll order some to patch our bald spots.Salukulady wrote:http://www.franksupply.com/

Re: Tiki bar care
Just put it together last night -while it was raining outside--however not what I imagined. My wife got me the one from Oriental Trading Co-don't know how long that will last outside-at least its a starter bar--Thanks again for your help
