Last night I got a call from the customer service dept at www.onlineshoes.com asking me to confirm a credit card order for several pairs of shoes to be delivered to a PO box in Houston, TX. I told him that nobody here placed an order and thanked him for being diligent about online CC fraud.

I contacted my CC company and a new one is in the mail.

Where do I go from here? Do I contact my local police to report it? Should I contact the Houston police?

Other ideas?

I'd do a credit check to make sure no credit has been taken out in your name.

Deffinetaley want to contact the fraud devision of your police department and the Houston police too.

That's the site set up by the FTC and truly is free. Other similar sites that advertise on TV are commercial companies, and while you might get credit reports from them they're also out to sell you other services.

This sort of thing happened to me once. The cc company did cancel the card, void the charges and send us new cards. However, there wasn't much criminally I could do. I asked the cc company for the address of where the merchandise was being sent and even though they had it, they couldn't tell me. I knew it was in New Jersey and I was ready to drive up and find the person who did this but they weren't allowed to give the full address. That p*** me off; almost more so then having my card number taken.

What was ordered you ask? Stuff from Fredericks of Hollywood. The problem is my wife isn't a Fredericks of Hollywood type person (althuogh I do like the catalogs ). And, once we ordered stuff, we got on their mailing list. We eventually got off of it but my wife was afraid that one of the catalogs would be delivered while we were out of town and had the neighbors getting our mail. So, I'd say call the shoe company and get off their mailing list asap since they probably sell their list to other companies and then they sell that list to more companies and you end up with alot of junk mail you probably don't want.

Try and figure out how someone got your CC number... Maybe do a spyware scan on your computer for a keylogger which records your keystrokes and sends them to a crook. Malwarebytes is a great one.

I doubt there's a lot the local authorities can do, especially if the thief is in another state.

People will often say thing like that but I have one thing to say back to them.

If the police have them on record because you told them about them then the next time they pull this crap on someone else they may have a decent chance of nailing them. The more information they have on these scum the better I say.

I didn't say not to report it, just don't be too hopeful they'll actually catch anyone.
