We feel really badly about this also.

Was wondering how Lulu's is doing?
Haven't heard anything official from JB. I'm sure we will. He may have said something at the concert last nigt but to be honest with the weather problems there interrupting the feed I could have missed hearing it. If we do hear anything we'll post it.

PHIN POWER to all those affected by the spill.

Prayers to all those along the Gulf coast whose lives have been affected by yet another manmade tragedy..........

This disaster points out so many shortcomings of offshore drilling. The first is the deaths of 11 workers on the platform. Prayers to those families as well.

BP now says it is "exploring" its options to stop the oil flow...... :o If they and other oil companies are permitted to operate these deep drill platforms shouldn't they have contingency plans in place????? Seems like they are just now trying to figure out their "options"........

The scary scenario is if this oil spill goes on for weeks (and it most likely will) the winds and gulf currents could actually carry this slick through the Florida straights and up the Atlantic seaboard......

Do you know how many contingency plans we have to have where I work? We have one for everything!! The big oil companies should have had something in place for all sorts of disaster's shouldn't they?
Unbelievable but should I even be surprised? Probably not. The older I get the harder it gets to remain optimistic. Maybe it is something everyone goes through. Prayers to the families.

Any and all info will be appreciated and passed along. Thanks!

Thinking some sort of fundraising in the parking lots this summer might help!

Nothing onshore east of Louisiana yet but the oil is expected later this week on Pensacola Beach, depending on weather. No fund raising that I'm aware of yet but volunteers are lining up to help with the cleanup.

It may get real bad.

I'll post any fund raising info I hear of.

I saw some surveys (CNN, ABCNEWS) where upwards of 55 percent approve the action(s) of the President on the oil spill disaster. Can someone please explain what he has done?

And BP....their response time and lack of plan are totally unacceptable.

We have a complete failure here on both the private and public front!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers

I loved the CEO of BP on GMA this morning, saying they'd take care of it, but that it wasn't their fault because another company's crew was manning their rig. What???

From the Pensacola paper:
• BRACE, United Way and First Call for Help are organizing volunteers for cleanup after the oil reaches the shores.
http://www.pnj.com/article/20100503/NEWS01/5030324

I'm sure the 3 above organizations would appreciate some funds. There may be some other information at the above link you could use like some local #'s, email addresses, etc. to contact some of the local organizations as well.

Too many emotions to say what I really feel at this moment...but thoughts and prayers go out to all of the families and businesses who have made their livings along the Gulf Coast for generations...I fear their lives will not be the same anytime soon. :(

BP on Today
"It wasn't our accident, but we are absolutely responsible for the oil, for cleaning it up, and that's what we intend to do," BP Group CEO Tony Hayward told NBC's "TODAY" show.

The rig that exploded on April 20 and then sank was run by another company, Transocean, he reminded viewers. That rig, he said, "was run by their people, their processes."
Hayward added that the failure of the rig's "blow-out preventer" — a device that should have shut off the well when the rig exploded and sank — was "unprecedented in our industry."

"What has failed here is the ultimate safety device on a drilling rig," he said, "There are many barriers of protection that you have to go to before you get to this. It isn't designed to not fail."
This is definitely the worst case scenario happening here. While BP owns the rights, they contracted out the drilling to another firm. There are probably many more suppliers and contractors scrambling to cover their backsides. I believe BP is doing all they can to stop the leak and will act swiftly to complete the cleanup. I am sure they are insured as Transocean and their suppliers. The insurance companies will pony up most of the money. The insurance requirements on these things is huge, even for "minor" suppliers. BP will gain nothing by "taking their time" they know it.

Without passing judgment on the policy or its proponents, I'm guessing we aren't going to be hearing any more "Drill Baby Drill" stump speeches for awhile.

We've been lucky so far in not seeing the immediate devastation to wildlife like we did with the Valdez, but I fear it is coming soon. This is a human and ecological nightmare, with no end in sight. An organization near and dear to my heart, the International Bird Rescue Research Center hit the ground running, they were on scene with Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research before most BP and government officials even had a clue what was going on. These organizations rely on donations and volunteers, and any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. IBRRC is just starting to recover from the massive pelican die off we had here in Cali but that didn't stop them from heading to the gulf. They've got some of the best folks in the business when it comes to the care of oiled birds and animals. I was hoping to take part in their latest oil spill response training but the timing didn't work out, hopefully the next one will. Save the Manatee Club is deeply concerned, too. :(

My heart goes out to all those whose livelihoods were just starting to recover from the devastating effects of Katrina, it's just a cruel, cruel blow. But I'm proud of those who are taking an active role in the response and recovery.

I have a friend that lives and works on the Gulf Coast. Here's what she posted on her FB page and I think it pretty much says it all
To all the "out-of-towners" offering prayers, good wishes and help during this crisis: THANK YOU! and please realize that one of the best ways you can help this area and its communities is to keep your reservation - come spend your vacation here, enjoy the lovely condos, swim in the pools, eat in the fabulous restaurants and shop in the unique stores. We hope to see you soon!

They should not only be prepared for their preventer to not work, they should be prepared for it to not work during a hurricane. *That* would truly be worst-case.

One of my FB friends works for a bird rescue facility in the Keys. They're already gearing up just in case. If the oil gets into the Gulf Loop current (which feeds into the Gulf Stream), this whole mess will end up streaming *through* the Keys and up the East Coast. Any species that can screw up something that beautiful, I'm not sure we deserve it.
