It represents the freedoms that we enjoy today. These freedoms include your right to disrespect the
very flag that represents your freedoms. In my opinion if you want to spend your money on a flag and then
disrespect it by wearing it as a piece of clothing or even burning it then by all means go ahead.
However if you so much as think about disrespecting mine? I'm gonna be forced to kick your A$$
But Don - Do you really think if I wore a tshirt that had an image of the American flag that I would intentionally be wearing it to disrepect it? MOST people don't see it that way...They think they are showing patriotic pride... but this thread was not started to argue that point.
A kid was sent home for wearing the colors RED WHITE and BLUE.....how politically correct can we get?
I don't think a tshirt with the image is intentiionally disrespectful. I think that if someone wears that tshirt in an educational setting knowing that it is in violation of rules than they are using the flag to be disrespectful of the rules and thus are being disrespectful of the flag.
Shannon thanks for standing up for my dead WWII Vet father. Anything I have to say about or to Skibo for his insulting statment would get me banned from here.

Well...(said in my best Bubba voice) I've been on sabbatical.
School uniforms would solve most problems and create fewer.
The only issue I have with this incident is with the kid in a bandana. I'm sure that's against school rules. I will also add that most swimtrunks today are long and look like shorts so don't visualise some stars and stripes thong like Will Farrell would wear. My guess is lots of boys wear swimtrunks to school and getaway with it because everyone thinks they are shorts.
I'm just glad that July 4th isn't during the public school year as I'm sure like Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, etc it would be either ignored, renamed or PC'd up so as to not offend anyone.

But Connie - it wasn't against the rules to wear the flag to school. It offended some hispanic students and THAT's why they were sent home.
I still maintain if it had been the other way around with the hispanic students wearing a Mexican flag on the 4th of July - nothing would have been done to them.

At the same time if I wish to show my love for my country by wearing a piece of clothing that includes a
photo or a patch of the American Flag then I will do so and if it hurts your feelings, tough. Get over it.
How can I not weigh in here? I am much more a "love it or leave it" person than not....that's just the type of house I was raised in. Don hit's on an issue that I think is central to this topic. If you want to allow the freedoms we have then those freedoms are bound to offend some...sometimes. It's a bit of a "chick-flick" but there is a great speach Michael Douglas makes at the end of The American President movie. The speach deals with being president but more importantly the freedoms that we all share. Yes...it's Hollywood but there is a lot of truth here.
Chick flick???? Not even. That's just a great movie.
yes I said that and I mean it.
An interesting point about the rules. There are those who will tell you that in a public school they should not be allowed to send a kid home for wearing something that may or may not offend someone. The exact opposite is true for private schools. "It's a private school so they can make their own rules"
My point here is just because the public school system is funded by taxes doesn't necessarily mean that they should let the kids wear anything they want. A line must be drawn somewhere or it will cease to be a place of education. I for one do not envy those who are in the position of having to set those lines in place but if a rule is good for a private school why wouldn't it be good for a public one?
I'm rambling here aren't I?
I'll stop now.
SAVE THE EARTH
It's the only Planet that has chocolate.
It seems the students wore them to get a rise out of people. The one kid was wearing swimtrunks. Is there any reason to wear swimtrunks to school? One kid had a bandana on, which are against school rules. If it was their intent to provoke people, the school had every reason to send them home.
Also, the topic title is a little misleading. Nowhere in the video is it called an "image of hate". Do we really need to be that sensational?
That's two of five. What were the other three horrible children doing/wearing?
I don't know. I do think they maybe intentionally did it to get a rise out of people, which is likely against school policy. Maybe they wanted the day off from school, who knows.
We don't know the whole story or what was discussed between these boys and the people they offended. I imagine quite a bit more happened than is being reported. Sensationalist media (and thread titles ) get people's panties in a bunch and they make kneejerk reactions.

Awesome movie. And I loved Annette Bening in it.
And here is another question for another thread...WHY DOES EVERY MAN IN THE WORLD LOVE ANNETTE BENING IN THIS MOVIE????
Interesting that the district officials disagreed with the school admins actions...methinks there's going to be a VP "reassigned" for next year...
And why on earth is a school celebrating Cinco de Mayo anyway? Celebrations of *any* kind are pretty much toast (or at least supposed to be) here in Cali. Being the melting pot that we are, it's not unusual for individual classes to acknowledge other holidays/celebrations, but to consider and label Cinco de Mayo as a "big deal on campus" astounds me. No wonder our schools are so screwed up.
Now you have me wondering if I can wear my patriotic thong
