I would head east as far as you can without needing a boat then head south - stop when you want to and either hang there for a few days or continue on down south until your vacation is 1/2 way over then turn around and do it all over again on the way back
Take a REAL road trip and see many places - and stop when the mood strikes you or something interests you. Above all, enjoy yourself and let yourself feel!

And, yeah, that's kind of what I've been thinking as a good possibility...
water, about 9-10 hours away, I hear people talk about it all the time....
Anybody have any specific NC spots to recommend?
I'm a PA guy but know the Carolina OBX pretty well. Most of the hotels/motels are around Kitty Hawk/Southern Shores/Kill Devil Hills. If you want a house then you have miles and miles of shore line to choose from. We prefer Duck which is about 5 miles north of the bridge but if you really want out of the way (to get away) I'd head south to Avon, Frisco, or Okracoke Island. Nothing but beach, fishing, and small crab houses. Stan White Realty has always been good to us - you can check them out on the web.
Annapolis MD is another suggestion. This is must see town, especially if you like colonial America. Lots of B&Bs and small hotels to choose from.
Good Luck -

We stay in TopSail NC its a sleepy little beachtown. If you want that blend in with the locals and quiet feel this is a good place. You arent to far from Wilmington NC where they have stuff going on. Or what I like to to is my Anual Pilgramage to Margaritaville in Myrtle Beach.. Its and 1.5-2 hour drive from Topsail depending on traffic and construction.
Whatever our gonna do make sure your trip is all about you and relax.

You might want to try Boston for a couple days (I loved the town!) then meander thru Cape Cod. Not sure how easily you could get accomodations, but it's a thought.baybreeze wrote:Thought about Boston, but was afraid it'll be worse than Erie, weather-wise. And BTW, today felt like WINTER!!!!!

(My GF) Moe's dad lives in NC, that's a great choice as well.
Have fun - and hang in there!

Hey Baybreeze - Hang in there; time heals all, or at least makes it more bearable. I know you're looking for something a little closer, but I've got to put in my two cents here. We live in the Upper Pennisula of Michigan so I know cold. We just took a full family vacation to Anna Maria Island, FL and spent most of our time trying to figure out how we could move down there! I can't begin to tell you how much we all loved it. My husband and I swore we could feel our blood pressure dropping. You know it's going well when your 21 year old son who no longer lives at home and has just spent the last 10 days with his family of 6 looks at you and says, "I really, really don't want to go home." And he's the cross country ski racer who lives for skiing and snow! If you're at all interested Allegiant Air has some ridiculosly low prices on nonstop flights. If we lived downstate we could fly from Grand Rapids to Tampa for $38 one way! You can't drive anywhere for that. Otherwise, I'd vote for the Outer Banks. Good luck and keep your face to the sun!

Hey BayBreeze!
I know you've made a tough decision and it will be for the better in the long run. Hang in there and know that you have a big support network here.
Depending on what you drive, it may be cheaper to fly to Ft. Lauderdale or Tampa or Wilmington than to drive, especially when you factor in your drive time. I see that there are fares starting around $180.00 round trip from Erie on US Airways. I didn't check the dates or availability.
Hope you find that one particular harbor.

I went with Topsail and after 12 hours drive time (whew!!!), I am here and I am just DELIGHTED...
OMG, it is simply gorgeous here!!! I can already tell that I'll have a hard time going back home. The only saving grace will be that at least Erie will be warm when I go back (I understand that today was a good weather day in Erie...go figure).
Any Parrotheads in the area are welcome to contact me and we can toss back a few...I'm here til Saturday.
Thanks again everyone

Have a great week and as the saying goes!
I love the NC beaches. My routine is pretty simple and predictable....basically I fish, sit on the beach, drink, eat, sleep and then start over the next day.
