Need Advice on Out of State Moves

Post by pema »

What is the most cost effective way to move about 500 miles?

I've looked at PODS and other similar services, and they are wayyy too expensive for my budget...

If I go the U-haul/Budget/etc route, I run into the issue of not being able to drive the truck and my car at the same time.

A one-way South West flight is much cheaper than renting a car dollie, so I could come back for my car later... But then I've got to factor in gas and wear and tear on the car.

My mom is willing to make the drive with me, but she can't drive my car because I have a stick shift. She isn't crazy about driving the moving van either.

She has an SUV, so we could rent one of those trailers that you tow behind your car (but she doesn't know if she can do that either). How hard are they to drive? How much wear and tear would that put on her older Rav 4?

Which truck rental companies are best?

Any and all advice or pointers would be much appreciated! I'm sure I've got questions that I haven't even thought of yet...

Why don't you spend the airfare money on a one way ticket for Todd to come down and drive the moving van back and you can drive your car.

Uhaul has bolt on trailer hitches for your car....you have a stick so you just leave it in Neutral and haul it behind the uhaul truck......costs a little more in gas....but saves the hassle...... :D :D :D :D :D

Oh...... Last time we did a state to state move (From California to Washington)....we found it was far cheaper to return the truck to the point of origin rather than doing a one-way trip.....so we left on a thursday from Seattle....drove to San Fransisco and loaded the truck and drove back to Seattle.....turned in the truck on Monday morning.......if the numbers work for you, you could drive the truck there, come back andf pick up your car and drive it to the new place.....

that would work, except i looked that up on Budget and their mileage rate is .59/mile and given that it would be over 1,000 miles round trip... :o ouch their one way price includes unlimited miles

I got nothin....I live in the same house I did when I was 4. But good luck with it.

Personally I'd be more likely to cut off my arm than drive a moving truck over 1000 miles....

they are expensive too... from what i've seen, it would be cheaper to fly back and pick up the car, then to rent one of those

Erin, do you have a friend/family member that could drive the car behind the truck, other than your mom, and you could fly them back? :) Or someone you could fly down from OH, one way, and they could drive the truck, while you drive your car?

When I moved from IL to CO we had a caravan of a lot of folks, and that helped. :)

When E moved from OK to CO?? He packed everything he was bringing into his pickup truck. Barely out of town, his truck died, and he had to go back, borrow his brothers vehicle, and a small trailer behind, and then got on the road again. :o :D

Yes, $$ is an issue, but sometimes it's the plan that makes the most convenient sense, too. :)

Oh, it's not the comfort that would give me pause....I'd be terrified to drive anything larger than my Subaru stationwagon... I'm a wimpy driver...

My sister hired a college kid from her neighborhood to drive her car while she drove the truck. And then he took a bus back home.
