Advice on Taking Cats on Long Road Trips?

I originally assumed that my cat couldn't come with me on this move, but you know what they say about assuming... I was very happy to find out I was wrong :D

It's an eight hour drive. My cat used to go on 2 hour trips with me on a weekly basis, but that was when she was younger. She was really good and calm. She curled up in her cat carrier and slept mostly. I had another cat at that time that screamed the whole trip, and I swear it looked like the current cat was rolling her eyes and if she could talk would have said "would you shut the f' up". But she was a real trooper on trips where she was the only cat in the car

I usually put her in the passegener seat facing toward me and run the seat belt through the handle of the carrier.

But this trip will be eight hours, and I'm not sure she can cross her paws that long? :o  Should i get her one of those rabbit water bottles or is it better that she not eat or drink anything?

Has anyone done it before?

Btw... Is there a weekly quota on advice threads?

I take one of mine to a vet 3 hours away and then back home with a stop for lunch..no issues at all with him.

I haven't done eight, but Diamonds was always my car buddy- even when I would go visit my parents overnight when I was less than an hour away, she came with me, and she made the trip to and from Indy a few times after I moved (now 6 hours away) as well. I let her wander since she would just curl up in my lap most of the time anyway, and I put a small litter box on the floor in the backseat for her. She used it just about every long trip. You could always stop the car and let her out of the carrier for a little while, but I wouldn't advise actually getting in or out of the car while she's loose.

Longest trip we took with Amber and Nutmeg was 6 1/2 hours from Ohio to Michigan. Oh! and we took Attilla on the same trip from Michigan to Ohio.

We were not packed to the gills, so we had a small disposable litterbox (You can get them at pet stores...they already contain litter) and we made sure all the car doors were closed and let the kittens use the box in the back of the station wagon part of my Subaru. They traveled in a cat carrier. If I remember correctly one used the box the other didn't have to. Attilla traveled in a large cage in the back of the same Subaru. He didn't use the box we put in the cage for him.

If your kitty has previous travel experience and is a pretty good traveler, I expect she will be the same with this trip. If you get a chance to pull over now and then, I would give her water in her dish. ( I'm not sure she would know what to do with the water bottle thingie)

And speaking of water if she has trouble with loose bowels right after you move don't be surprised. A change in water wreaks havoc on some cats digestive systems. (When I showed cats, I always took water from home...but she will need to readjust to the water in the new place anyway...but just be aware.)

I'm so glad you are taking her with you. I was kinda worried about her. Options for 10 year old cats are kinda scarce.

Good luck!

Check the graphic on the truck:

(kind of blurry, but it says "Don't pack dog and cat in same box".)

My brother and ex sister in law had a cat that got packed when they moved once. They thought it was hiding in the old apartment (it was rarely seen- the only times I've seen it, it got dragged out from under a bed), and they had a very, very angry box when they got to the new house. Luckily they were just moving a few miles by pickups, rather than a long distance thing, so the cat wasn't in the box for all that long.
