Super Bowl 2014 at the Meadowlands

Post by JollyMon66 »

New York will host 2014 Super Bowl

Check the antifreeze, grab the mittens, make sure the airport's not snowed in.

We're going to the Super Bowl.

In New Jersey. In February!

NFL owners voted Tuesday to put the 2014 Super Bowl in the new $1.6 billion Meadowlands Stadium that this season will become home to the New York Jets and Giants. It's the first time the league has gone to a cold weather site that doesn't have a dome and, until now, those places couldn't even bid on the big game.

The league made an exception for the New York area, and New York only. But just a few years ago, the NHL experimented with an outdoor game on New Year's Day, and it was such a success that teams now fight to host what's become an annual event.

"We believe the owners have the faith in us that 3 1/2 years from now we'll put on a remarkable event,'' Giants co-owner Jonathan Tisch said on the NFL Network. "The greatest game in the world will be played on the greatest stage in the world.''

Per the league, the 2014 Super Bowl will take place on either Feb. 2, 9 or 16, pending the format of the season and schedule.

I am certain if I am to be given or to win Super Bowl tickets once in my lifetime...this will be the year. The average high temp for this area is about 40 but we all know it gets much colder than that.

i like all the fanfest stuff before the game....did it the year SF played SD in Miami.....it was cool....but as a football fan....i'd rather see it on TV.....as for NY hosting....good for NY bad for the NFL....everything done has to be indoors...no golf tournaments ...shark tournaments like they did in Miami.....now band playing on the beaches.....No Parties on South Beach or French Quarters.....i personally would want warm weather......and Pam ....i'm sure it will be the easiest of Super Bowl tickets to get........they should rotate between Miami , New Orleans , San Diego and Los Angelas....even Tampa could be put into the mix

Well, it's number 3 in my trifecta of sports events, been to the Indy 500, the Kentucky Derby and for me a Super Bowl would make it complete. I guess it would depend on who ends up playing too.

I've been lucky enough to attend 3 Super Bowls -first one in San Diego -won the tkts -had seats in front of Franco Harris & in the same row as Joe Theisman (yes I got his autograph -great guy)
Second one was the Giants in Tampa in 1990 -WE WON!!!! and unfortunatley the next one was also in Tampa and we lost :-? But all 3 were the best time ever!!!!!

And BTW, it's SUPPOSED to be cold during football season. My best football memories are from high school when the grass field would get muddy or when we had to bring blankets and stuff and drink hot chocolate.

If we let it happen - the kids of today will eventually turn the NBA, NHL, NFL and MLB into an online gaming league and there won't be any reason to have stadiums or actual real players  Hell - they already don't know how to go outside and start a pick up game with the neighborhood kids!

A bad choice for fans and players. But money talks.

I can't imagine that watching Brees v Manning in zero degree weather on a frozen field will be a match up of the stars that will hold peoples attention.

And being from Wisconsin and a Packer fan trust me when I say that Packer nation won't be anywhere near as motivated to spend cash and travel for a week to NY/NJ as they would for a warm weather destination.

Who's the winner in this selection?

Cheers

He has changed over the years because from things I've heard, he use to be a dick.

As for the game in NY, heh sure, why not. If the teams are good enough to get to the Super Bowl, the best team should find a way to win, regardless of the elements. If they are going to have it in NY, they should consider having it any of the other outdoor stadiums, such as DC.

Is this what you're talking about??? :o
Hot Rum Chocolate recipe
Scale ingredients to servings
1 oz dark rum
5 oz hot cocoa
1 tbsp whipped cream
1 tsp sugar

Ah...those were the days....

Regarding the game......game location is about the fans. If the majority of the fans think this is a good idea then so be it. Obviously if it's my team (Lions, yeah right) I'd be stoked to get to ANY Super Bowl. But realistically, If I'd be lucky enough to score tix to the game I'd MUCH rather experience the Super Bowl in a warm weather environment & I think most fans who have the means to experience a Super Bowl would agree. And even though the Super Bowl has been played in domes here in the north (Detroit/Twin Cities), it really isn't the place for it to enjoy all of the outdoor festivities that go with Super Bowl Week IMHO!

I'm not a fan of this, the super bowl is a week long event. Being outside for the fan events won't be much fun in NJ. There isn't much around the meadowlands except parking lots and superfund cleanup sites. Sure NYC is close and surely will get some additional revenue, but like Detroit, there is no draw. My team played in the Detroit SB. My wife and I agreed that it wasn't worth the expense to go. Most of this was based on the location we really didn't want to extend our stay and use the trip as a vacation replacement. Now a warmer area like southern CA, Miami or New Orleans we would easily sacrifice a week sailing BVI to spend a week there to see our team play. Even if our team is in the NJ super bowl, we won't go, despite the fact that the stadium is less than 100 miles from our home.

This location is very unfair towards the warm weather locations and the dome teams in the north. Just look at their records in below freezing games. These teams will be an underdog going in just based on the location and weather forecast. The super bowl should be played on a neutral field that gives no advantage to either participant. The NJ location does not do this. The league will still sell their tickets and get their revenues, I am sure they see a financial advantage in using this location they wouldn't put the game there for any other reason.

I do wonder if the pro bowl will be held the week before in the same location like they did this year. The league had a hard enough time fielding two teams of starters from the league I can't imagine anyone wanting to play a scrimmage in the NJ cold.

I'll agree with the first part, about not worth the trip for the fans. I know I wouldn't spend any money to go, even if my team was playing.
As for the part about the teams....nope, sorry. If they can play the Conference Championship outdoors on Lambeau Field, they can play the SB on a frozen field too. Saying it's not fair to the Dome teams....too bad. Playing on a carpet in a Dome isn't fair to the teams that have natural turf outdoor stadiums, but they have to adjust.
I think the NFL is opening a can of worms....if they hold the SB in NJ, then the Pats, Packers, Seattle, Pittsburgh and all the other teams should be able to hold it as well, but I'm sure the NFL is going to find this a financial disaster, and put an end to it. I also agree with you regarding the Pro Bowl....but then again, it's probably the least watched of any league's All star Game. I quit watching years ago.

Wouldn't bother me a bit. :D No matter where they play some teams, some fans will be disadvantaged. Would a warmer climate be a nicer destination? Sure. But there are plenty of great things to do in NYC with shuttles and trains out to the stadium.

Personally, I don't care about the advantage to outdoor teams since my team is an outdoor-cold weather team. But think about Dallas, beside the crybaby-bandwagon fans, the huggy kissy media will cry about how 'merica's team got screwed having to play pittsburgh or buffalo in the snow. and yuh, there will be a huge distraction by the cold weather teams attempting to get a SB, I can hear it now, the rooneys deserve to get a SB because they are wonderful, Green Bay deserves to get a SB because of they won the first two. Cleveland should get a SB so the mistake by the lake can have a chance at redemption. On the pro bowl, I wouldn't even call it an all star game anymore, did you see the roster of players that showed up this year?

This Superbowl will probably feature Jimmy in the half time show.

I can see him now up on stage at mid field freezing his cahonees off in the shorts, shirt, no shoes he's famous for.
