I would recommend you try them out. Check out some stuff on youtube. I saw them in college a few times, not sure if you remember the "gin and juice" cover that was around in 1999 that people thought was PHISH, its actually the gourds. I have this cd and enjoy it - Gogitchyershinebox

Wayne, you will like them. I saw them at ACL one year and the area was packed beyond belief...also saw them with about 50 others early one day at Galveston Mardi Gras. I haven't heard much about them lately.

Let me know how it goes!

One of my very favorite bands from the past ten years or so. Kevin Russell has a new record out under his pseudonym of "Shinyribs". It's a bit more polished and straightforward lyrically than his work with the Gourds but still very much worth checking out.

A fellow Gourds fan was kind enough to send a copy of this Dutch made documentary to me on VHS years ago but now you can watch it online thanks the convenience of the YouTubes:

Another clip from Friday night's Gourds show at the Cat's Cradle. For those of you that have never had the pleasure of experiencing a Gourds concert, this clip pretty epitomizes what one is like.

There's currently a documentary being filmed about the Gourds called All the Labor. Here's a description of the film from the All the Labor page on Facebook:

ALL THE LABOR is the story of five Austin, Texas musicians collectively-known as The Gourds. In March, The Gourds recorded their tenth full studio album at "The Barn" in Woodstock, New York. Produced by longtime Bob Dylan sideman, Larry Campbell, "Old Mad Joy" was released in September on Vanguard Records. We began filming ALL THE LABOR in late August when the band rented an abandoned kitchen in a former mental institution in south Austin to practice the songs Campbell helped them hone back in March. Since then, the alt-country roots rockers have toured relentlessly - as they have for the past 17 years - in support of their first major label release. Their non-stop tour schedule is also intended to keep their many dedicated fans happy. While all of the The Gourds' critically-acclaimed records deserve the praise they have received, fans know that a full understanding of the band can only be achieved through experiencing them live. ALL THE LABOR will introduce viewers to the energy and excitement of the band's live performances while painting an intimate portrait of these talented songwriters and musicians at the top of their game. ALL THE LABOR is a production of Big Sky Pictures, LLC, in association with High Plains Films.

Real Life Real Music with Kevin Russell (aka "Shinyribs") of the Gourds. Looks like we can look forward to a new Shinyribs record within the next few months. By the way, the Kev Russell's Junker album he mentions here is well worth seeking out.

The Gourds covering "Casey Jones" by the Grateful Dead during their New Year's Eve Masquerade Ball at the Scottish Rite Theater in Austin last night. The special guest performing with them is Mark Creaney. The sound quality leaves a lot to be desired but it's the only clip I'm aware of of the performance at present. Oh, in case you were wondering, that is bassist Jimmy Smith dressed as the Skipper from Gilligan's Island.

Kind of caught me off guard but I think that was the point. They've often been compared to the Grateful Dead but I don't know if they're necessarily fans of 'em.
