Re: LeBron James
Now maybe people will start to realize that most athletes are mercenaries who don't really give a crap about the fans. They pay lip service to the "all I care about is winning a championship" mantra, but it all comes down to money. A couple of years ago I heard a sportswriter say, and I wish I could remember who it was, "when an athlete says it's not about the money, it's about the money."
I still watch sports, mostly when I don't have anything better to do with my time, but I don't follow any team as closely as I used to and I sure as hell don't obsess over them. Most of the time when I watch a game, except for the guys on the local teams and the stars on the the other teams, I don't even know who most of the players are.

Listen, I'm not the type to defend LeBron James. I am a fan of Dwayne Wade, and will root for Miami because of him, not Miami. I started this thread out of a curiosity, and nothing more. But after hearing everyone's inevitable over-reaction...I do have this to say (again, not a James defender, but trying to put this in perspective):
If Dan Gilbert had such a problem with LeBron "quitting" on the team, and thinks so little of him, why did he want to re-sign him so badly? He's just bitter. Don't pursue someone with such vigor and then spew such venom about him when you lose out. It cheapens you. If you really wanted to keep him, you should have made sure you were in a better spot salary-cap wise. Miami, New York, Chicago....they all made sure that they had the money to make a play for him AND other pieces. You didn't.
Everyone has been so quick to judge LeBron, but remember, we are constantly bashing athletes for going for the most money, or going to the place that will give them the ball the most. He did neither. He took LESS money, and will have to share the ball MORE in Miami. He said it was about winning, and he went to the place that he felt he had the best chance of winning, regardless of what it did to his legacy. Anyone who wants to rip on him for that is being a hypocrite.
Personally, I do wish he would have stayed in Cleveland. I'm an Ohioan by birth, and think it would have been a better story if he had finally brought the city some glory. But life isn't a story book. He feels he can win in Miami, right or wrong, so he went to Miami. He didn't do it for money. Regardless of where he plays, he'll make money...endorsements, etc. He didn't do it for personal glory....if he did, he wouldn't have gone from (pardon the wrestling reference) face to heel. He wants to be the best statistical player, he stays in Cleveland. He wanted to win. Even if it turns out that he chose wrong, he did it to try to win a Championship. He knows it won't be known as "LeBron's team"....and it appears that he didn't care. Give him credit for being willing to not be "The Guy".
Personally, I don't think they will win....not yet. They have 4 players right now. Total. Mario Chalmers, Chris Bosh, Dwayne Wade, LeBron James. (They traded Michael Beasley this morning). They didn't have a first round pick in the draft (although they did get 4 second-rounders, who will all probably make the team, since there are a lot of uniforms available). With what's left on the free agent market, it'll be a struggle for them to find the pieces that they need. And they have nothing to trade. It's not gonna be an easy ride.

Re: LeBron James
LaFraud was a free agent and being that he had the right to negotiate the best deal for himself. I'm fine with the destination he picked. I am disgusted at the process he employed to make this move. Instead of doing touring the cities that had the cap space to sign him, he demanded that they come to his home town. The drama with the ESPN show was pathetic. Using the boys club kids as a prop wasn't necessary, Yeah, ESPN game the boys club some money but most of those kids only cared about James if he signed with their team...if they even followed the NBA. Do the puppet show in his hometown and I might be less offended but not much. Even the announcement "I'm taking my talent to South Beach" Its Miami. He is going there to play basketball for a city not hang out on the beach and pick up Kardashians....and what talents? What has this guy won? nada. He should have notified Cleveland before the announcement.
He should have done this just like every other player in the league, visit a couple of cities, talk to the management, tour the city and then announce the signing at the team's facility in a press conference. The circus act was a joke and makes the NBA even more irrelevant.

As for Dan Gilbert...the man has the right to be angry. He came to Cleveland and made the Cleveland Cavs a first-class organization.....He brought in the people he needed to and went after the players that he felt would bring a Championship to Cleveland. This is quite a goal giving the fact that he is from Michigan!! He promised the Cleveland fans.....that he would bring the city a Championship and I believe he will do that.....with or without "LeBrat"!
He basically allowed "LeBrat" to call every shot the team did or have approval, to keep "Le Brat" happy, for the last 2 years! He built the team a $25 million dollar practice facility on route 21 because it was a direct shot from "LeBrat's" home in Bath. I guess his Bentley doesn't have the a steering wheel.
The Great "Lebrat"....got into a collusional agreement with your respected "D" Wade and Chris Bosh to end up on the same team, 2 years ago!! "Lebrat", allowed the Boston series to be lost, so that he could put together this deal to play with these people HE RESPECTS. Afterall , all it is about is him wanting to WIN and he couldn't win in Cleveland, especially if you stop playing during the playoff games.
We now have 3 people who are bigger then Basketball. They are calling the shots and they manipulated this free-agent season to all end up in the same place, so they can have their own "DREAM-TEAM"! But in a place where it does payoff $$$$$. In the public sector, where they can benefits by the endosements and power!!!
"LeBrat" is such a decent person that he didn't return a phone call or email or text message since he met with the Cavs last Saturday! The Cleveland Cavs didn't find out about his "DECISION" until he announced it on ESPN! Real Class!!
The team that has paid you $97 million dollars over the last 7 years , doesn't deserve a phone call to say..."this is what I decided to do"? I think this is the true "LeBrat James"!!
Selfish and self-centered!
I think that Dan Gilbert has more then good reason .........to be angry!
He announces the "DECISION" in a Boys and Girls club in front of these young children. Did you hear all the applause when he announced his decision. There was shock! He then makes it a point to say that the monies raise , about 2+ million dollars is going to the Boy and Girls Clubs. Like this makes what he did more acceptable!
As this all shakes out.....you will find out more and more about the terrific "LeBrat", taking away any respect that anyone may still have for him!

But let me ask this.... you, or your son or daughter just got a job offer, that has more and better benefits and they (or you) feel it is the best decision to make career wise, would you hold that against them? You would support them. Which I am sure that LeBron is doing.
And yeah whatever, it could have been handled differently with how it was presented...but that all comes with age, maturity and experience. Something that you hope your parents would pass along to you....
I'm sure his parents are happy he has a job, and that is all it is...a job....
He is not the reason for anything...the Citys (any) have a great deal to do with, how that city operates. When all is said and done - the government is behind something somewhere to cause som issue. I am not saying LeBron, did not contribute to revenue in the city...I am just saying, there are so many more that contribute to the city (any).

Re: LeBron James
What I've heard on the radio is that the general consensus is that this move cheapens his worth (he won't be nothing more than a supporting player, even if he wins that championship....) It also has Kobe Bryant anticipating this challenge as this makes his life much more interesting.
Myself, I think he was probably a better fit in Chicago, but at the same time the way that he pretty much blew off Cleveland tells me exactly what he thinks of his homestate (and this is probably the end of the Cleveland franchise in the next couple of years anyway...) IMO Lebron should pack it all up and move to Florida permanently to get away from there especially because he won't feel comfortable there ever again... (And here's semi-hoping that he finds out exactly why Miami wasn't such a good idea this fall...)
I actually think LeBron is a great athlete but really a poor team player which is the main reason he wasn't able to win in Cleveland. Look for a Allen Iverson storyline within the next year or so...

Ben as many others...Tiger,Vic .... So on have screwed up. As many have that are given money. Our city is not proud if him. We know it was his decision to screw up. Or be placed in a bad situation. Oh remember conceret evidence is needed.
But if he was dismissed from the team the city is not going to be in
an uproar.
It is up to the owners to keep what they want. Protect what they need. And correct what is wrong.
The city has influnce too.
I'm done with this thread. These forums are to speak what feel. Not to get into debates to try to lower anothers spirit/self-esteem. That typically comes from some who has none.

Try to view this from OUTSIDE of your Northern Ohio home. Try to look at it from a neutral perspective. You have a clear built-in bias, and therefore will refuse to see any point of view outside of your own. For that reason, I will not be goaded into a debate with you. All I will say is, Welcome to the world of big money business.parrothead216 wrote:Captain P...I didn't see any over-reaction...only honest hurt feeling by people who have been screwed over, one time too many!CaptainP wrote:Listen, I'm not the type to defend LeBron James. Re: LeBron James
Most of your points are valid. I do wish to contest this one point, however. I LOVED that he did it. Instead of going on a "Grand Tour" in which he's showered with a bunch of celebrity cameos, Keys to Cities, and a big circus, he handled the negotiation process behind closed doors, where it belonged. I thought that was the best thing to do, even if it was for selfish, "You want me, come get me" reasons. I didn't need to be subjected to 6 straight nights on SportsCenter watching him acting Buddy Buddy with Billy Crystal one day, Jim Belushi the next, Spike Lee the next, Jay-Z the next, etc. Unnecessary, and I for one am glad he skipped it.Skibo wrote: I am disgusted at the process he employed to make this move. As for "King James", blech. The whole this is a travesty... Spoiled, overgrown child, like most NBA players. I couldn't care less who he plays for and every minute of airtime wasted on him could have been better spent covering something good that someone is doing in the world....

As for "King James", blech. The whole this is a travesty... Spoiled, overgrown child, like most NBA players. I couldn't care less who he plays for and every minute of airtime wasted on him could have been better spent covering something good that someone is doing in the world....

But after hearing everyone's inevitable over-reaction ...I do have this to say (again, not a James defender, but trying to put this in perspective):

Re: LeBron James
I think the whole thing was idiotic.
LeBron's public decision (On prime time national TV? Please. You're not that important. You want to give money to kids, just donate. Don't make a spectacle out of it.), the hypocritical response from the Cavs owner (He's a quitter, but we tried as hard as anybody else to get the quitter on our team?).
I'm just glad it's over.
