This is sort of a long story, sorry. My son was selling his car a '99 VW Cabrio which was pretty beat-up and the transmission wouldn't go into reverse. Thus it would not pass NJ State inspection and with the book value being around $1800 in great condition minus the transmission work we really didn't think it was worth the effort. So as nice parents we helped him our with a '92 Toyota and so he decided to sell his crap car to one of those places who buy junk cars. He called a few places maybe 3 or 4 and one said he would give him $500 and be there tomorrow. Then that afternoon another place called him and said they would send someone down this afternoon to look at the car and offer $500. This guy came with cash and negotiated to pay $300 for the car. We took the cash and signed the title over to him which he took only the title with him. He said that he will send a tow truck over either later that evening or the next day. The next day my son gets a call on his cell saying that they are sending someone over to pick up the car and he says OK. A tow truck shows up and hooks the car and pulls off. My son had to flag the driver down just to get a receipt. Now here's where it gets good. The guy who paid him the $300 calls and says there is a tow truck in front of your house and where is the car? Then he starts telling him that I sold the car twice and owe him the $300 back. We said now way and you can take us to small claims court. We then told this guy we will call the police and report the car stolen and call our auto insurance company and file a comprehensive claim. He now says to not contact the police and his boss with call the folks who took the car and work this out. Turns out that the place who took the car made up some bs excuse about my son giving the car to them but they soon acknowledged the mistake and said they would return the car to our house where the new owner could send a truck to get the car. Needless to say no car yet. I spoke to the new owner this morning and updated him. I told him to ask his boss to work things on his end and he didn't sound to upset. I then went to my local police department and told an officer the whole story who informed us that as soon as the new owner paid us the cash and drove away with the title he is now the owner and whatever happens to it from there. If he chose to leave the car in front of my house that's his issue. Basically what I have heard is that they call these people 'Car Pirates'. So beware if someone try's to pull this one with anyone you know. Basically the way we see it is if they try this on someone and they are just intimidated or just doesn't want the hassle they might pay the $300 and this guy has some easy money. Scam written all over it.
