want to limit the carry-ons for airplanes??

After going wuthout luggage in Italy for 3 days I'm a carry-on'er too. Actually, my packing habuts changed dramatically after that. the checked bags are 'cross-packed', with stuff for both of us in each bag, and the carry ons have our clothes for the 1st 2-3 days. On the return, those go into the checked baggage, leaving more room in the carry on for all the crap I buy.

We have moved away from the rollerboards to the LL Bean duffles. They are lighter, fit better, and come in great colors, which has saved our butts on at least one occasion when our stuff was about 10 rows behind our seats and we were late with a short connection. 'Send up the blue flowered duffle' is much more efficient than 'do you see my generic heavy black rollerboard?'

My carry on is an official carry on size which is pretty big, but I travel all of the time so I haul butt so I dont hold anyone else up. That is a big pet peeve of mine- when people take forever. You would think that someone was knitting a sweater before sitting down!

Earlier this year I was stepping into my row as I was sliding my duffel bag into the overhead compartment. The flight attendant said "You must be an experienced traveler." I told her "It isn't brain surgery."

When they started the liquids in a small bag and out of the carryon rule, I decided to check everything. It makes the adventure past the TSA rocket skientists a little less annoying. I still carry the laptop. The only time I have ever noticed severe overhead abuse is on flights out of San Juan where all the cruise ship people have their duty free liquor.

As Spainjane (and the GW crew that year) can attest.. I was in the Air the day that rule was created..
what hacks me off is I get the "you are a man you are going to check one bag and carry on TWO???"

I carry two bags on also. One contains my Cpap machine and the other contains my meds, blood sugar test kit and my blood pressure machine. NONE of that stuff is going anywhere near the baggage hold.

This is why Spirit airline started to charge for carry-on -because of the delay in everyone shoving it up in the bins & holding up the plane -you are not charged if you bag fits under the seat in front of you. It actually costs you more to carry-on than check a bag

i usually fly southwest, and their allowable carry-on size is smaller than most airlines. the last time i bought a new bag (a roller bag), i wrote down the size requirments and took them and a tape measure with me. i discovered in looking at bags that most bags that are advertised as meeting the carry-on requirements for most airlines are WAY too big for southwest. also, the dimensions on the tag are for compartment space, and the size limits that are s'pose to be enforced by the airline INCLUDE the wheels and handles. so there conflicting information does add to the problem...

i know that the tape measure thing is typical accountant behaivor, and that your average shopper isn't going to do that. but there are also people carrying on stuff that is wayyyyy too f'n big and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that.

southwest also has some planes with smaller baggage bins than their other planes. my bag, standing up on it's wheels, is much shorter than is allowable. it fits in most bins lengthwise with room to spare, no problem. but on certain southwest flights, i have to flip it around so that it is flat side up and wheels out and it just barely fits. the first flight where i came across that (and it was the second leg right after a connection and i knew my bag fit just fine on the first flight), i had to figure that out the hard way and people were waiting on me. on the return flight home, i came across that again but the crew mentioned the wheels out trick as part of the boarding instructions. the warning on that was def a time saver. but again my bag was smaller than regulation. so, not every regulation sized bag will fit in those bins.

but i always measure my bag once it is completely packed, and i know that it is approprietaly sized. i always pass by the empty seats in the front even tho i hate sitting any further back than i have to, and i take the first available aisle seat with space in a bin within arms reach of that seat. i make every effort to get my bag out of the bin and off the plane quickly. but there are a lot of people that either don't fly often enough to understand the system or just don't bother to be respectful to others while traveling.

the other thing that is wrong with this system is this... if every passenger on a full flight brings the maximum amount of allowable carry-on luggage, it won't all fit. the airlines are counting on the fact that not every one will carry-on their luggage. and that brings us around to one of the points that Santa made in the original posts... more and more people want to carry-on their luggage.

if they outlaw roller bags, i will still carry my bag. but i think if people can only carry-on what they can comfortably carry, it will put a big dent in the amount of stuff that people bring with them. the small women dragging sofa sized roller bags will most likely stop (or they may break a nail ). but i have seen men do it too

Yea. Flight attendants will start to quite mid flight, 30,000 feet up, rather then on the ground.

I think it was last December on my Air Tran flight where I saw a guy trying to fit one of those hard sided Samsonite suitcases into the overhead bin. Now c'mon...it's one thing to try to squish an oversized softsided bag into the bin...but hard sided??? The FAs just stood their watching, instead of grabbing the bag. I fault the gate agents as the first failure to enforce the size limit. Heck, most gates have the little bins where you can stick your bag to see if it fits...but have you ever seen one used? Noooo. Then I fault the FAs. There usually are at least 2 standing right there when you enter the plane. How hard would it be for them to say, "sorry, that bag won't fit" and gate check it immediately, instead of waiting 10 minutes or so watching while the asshat tries to make it fit in the bin.

I have to check a bag, since most of my trips involve some sort of nature excursion and therefore my photography equipment. My backpack contains my camera and lenses, binocs, laptop and portable hard drive and a small purse and whatever else I can fit in it (usually a book and snacks). It typically weighs more than my suitcase. There have been some planes where it has barely fit in the bin, so I can't imagine most suitcases fitting in. As much as I love the size of my current laptop screen, I am downsizing when I get my new one, simply to make travel easier. It definitely was easier before I got into photography!

I do my best to be a polite, helpful and efficient traveler...is it too much to expect the same from my fellow passengers?

I have the LL Bean duffles too...both the pink and the blue hawaiian prints. Mine have wheels though. They definitely are easy to spot! My current luggage is black with white polka dots, which is also easy to spot. I had the red Swiss Army luggage years ago, while everyone was still using black. Now the red is pretty common, hence the switch to polka dots and hawaiian prints.

I've taken my "wallet on a string" out of my backpack to get my I'd to go through security.

I've had the TSA person tell me (at different airports) that I have to put the wallet back in my backpack before they can let me pass. I could only take two items passed them.

If they can be persnickity about that, they can tell someone with a non carryon sized bag to go check the bag.

there is a federal regulation that limits carry-ons to two bags (with certain exceptions that Penny brought up). The size regulations on carry-ons varies airline to airline.

i have small black shoulder bag from LL Bean that i got for christmas one year. i tied one of those wrist sized leis to each end of the bag. they help a lot

if they went to a system where you were limited to what fits under your seat, i would do that. except i would add my toiletry kit (which is very small) to that list

I'm tired of lugging around my laptop when I travel for personal reasons
(business travel I need my full blown laptop).

It's great for travel!!!! It only weighs about 2.8lbs. I love it for travel!!! I bought a USB CD/DVD burner as this is my primary computer now. The only thing is that the keyboard is about 80% smaller than your standard keyboard so it does take a little getting used to it. When I'm at home I use my wireless keyboard and mouse.
