About all I can add to this discussion is that it must be great that most of you people seem to be able to (or have a legitimate need to) fly to all these places — whether it's for vacation or business-related travel. Since I got out of high school (many, many years ago!) I can count on one hand the number of times I've boarded an airplane for anywhere!

When I fly, I check my luggage. My carry-on is my guitar. After watching the "United Breaks Guitars" video, I ain't doing it any other way.

Technically, it fits into the "carry on" size checker. It just sticks out a bit at the top. :)

I was on a flight once where a guy had his guitar in the overhead, taking up the space of 3 rollerboards, and wouldn't let anyone else place anything in that bin, as he was afraid of potential damage. The flight was overbooked and delayed. His actions caused a chain reaction of many passengers having to place their items 3,6, 20 :o rows behind their seats, which caused the delayed flight to be even later.
Not cool.

Many years ago I was on a flight where a guy put his uncased guitar (odd?) in an already crowded overhead bin. I looked at my friend and said, "What the hell is he thinking?" We hit a nasty spot of turbulence, the bin opened and the guitar came flying out and cracked the guy behind us in the head and narrowly missed hitting my friend. The guy it hit ended up needing stitches. The owner of the guitar was only worried about the damage to his guitar, until the flight crew told him it was entirely possible he would be liable for the medical bills.

I completely understand not wanting to check such an item (I feel the same way about my camera equipment). There has to be a solution that works for everyone....perhaps starting with raising the hiring standards for baggage handlers. :-?

Can't trust all TSA employees either

Former TSA supervisor admits stealing luggage
http://www.mynorthwest.com/category/loc ... g-luggage/

A former supervisor for the federal Transportation Security Administration has pleaded guilty to stealing $20,000 worth of jewelry and other items from checked luggage at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

The U.S. Attorney's office in Seattle says 50-year-old Randy Pepper entered the plea Monday at U.S. District Court in Seattle.

Pepper was fired in July 2009 after another TSA worker saw him removing items from checked luggage. Surveillance video confirmed it, and investigators discovered Pepper had pawned the items.

Prosecutors say the stolen items included gold diamond rings and sterling silver necklaces and earrings.

Pepper faces up to a decade in prison and a $250,000 fine when he's sentenced in November, but he is expected to face a guideline range of closer to six months to one year in prison.

That's what I was thinking, too.

Although, carrying on doesn't guarantee safety for your valuables.... My co-worker had an envelope containing about $100 stolen from his carryon in business class while he was sleeping. I now lock my rollaboard.....

i don't put valuables in the overhead either. they go in the bag that goes under my seat.

but nobody would bother stealing the kind of jewelry that i wear most of the time  or if they did, they would be really disappointed

Sometimes you don't have a choice if it is a big/heavy item. If I get any more camera equipment I'd have to look into those cases that you check (looks like a small trunk), and that scares me to death. First you have to worry about it being tossed around, then you have to worry about it being stolen. I saw one of those come rolling down the conveyor belt...it was covered in dents even though there were FRAGILE stickers all over it. I know they're well padded just for that reason, but still...I was having a coronary and it wasn't even mine. The young guy it belonged to just shrugged. I have a camera/computer backpack and I can't fit one more thing in it. As it is, it barely fits in some overhead bins. I'd never check jewelry though, or a small camera. I've had to check my binoculars a couple of times. While they're expensive to me, they're not irreplaceable so I take the chance. If I ever get a *really* nice pair I won't be doing that.

I think my parents might win a prize for one of the oddest carry ons ever. My great aunt (whom I was named for) passed away in Wisconsin. When my folks finally got there for the funeral, everything that my aunt had designated to come to our family had mysteriously disappeared...except for her sterling silver flatware. My uncle had had it appraised and I think that's the only reason it was still there...because there was a record of it. My folks knew it would probably disappear too, so they decided to bring it home with them. How they did that, I'll never know, because I can barely lift the chest. They must have put some of the silver into another carry on, because 25+ years ago it still would have been too heavy for them. That would have caused some serious damage if it conked someone on the head! I imagine they might have a hard time trying to carry on something like that now...but then again...maybe not.

On Southwest, the bins are sized such that there's usually room for one rollerboard end-in past the end of the guitar, and room for a couple of soft or smaller things in front of the neck, and I help people get things stowed there in such a way that as much space as possible is used without breakage.

And I see people who bring way more stuff on-board than my guitar, who *also* are part of why some folks have to put their gear way in the back of the plane.
