Most Improved Buffett Songs?

When you have a career that spans the years like Jimmy...evolution takes hold and certain songs are re-released or modified from the original studio version. Being interested in the history behind music, I enjoy looking at the evolution of a performers songs over the years.

In your opinion...what Buffett songs have been "improved" upon re-release of new studio material or by the way Jimmy performs the song live today?

(if we had an old thread on this sorry...didn't see it before)

For me...3 come to mind:

Nadirah singing Creola...especially live. She has the PERFECT tone to put your mind in the low country looking for a little cajun cooking.

Nadirah's contributions to SOSOS

The use of a bari sax in Saxophones rather than the base guitar - speaking of Saxophones...I sure would love to hear that one played a little more

I told Nadirah last year that she needs to tell Jimmy to stop singing Creola...she OWNS it now and he can't hold a candle to her version. She blushed and said thanks.

For me, I think his acoustic version of Nautical Wheelers has gotten better than the original (not that the original was bad). I think he really enjoys performing that song. Also, Distantly In Love rings a bell. I love the Live in Anguilla version of it as opposed to the original.

To contrast, he absolutely slaughters Southern Cross now. Back when he started performing it in the mid-late 90's, it was awesome. So awesome, that even Stephen Stills commented once that Jimmy does a better version of that song than they did. The version on T/Th/S is a great recording and version of that song. Now he misses lines, is off tempo, and screams half the song. I honestly think he is sick of playing that song, but it has become a staple at his live shows because the masses love it.

Good question, and I want to give you a thoughtful response. The first song that comes to my mind is the updated version of "Saxophones" that appears on "Meet Me in Margaritaville," which you have already said. As a second song, I'm going to say "Margaritaville" itself. I love the "lost verse" that Jimmy often adds during concerts.

I like that he's doing the lost verse in Margaritaville too but I wish he'd drop the "salt, salt, salt" crap. That just irritates the hell out of me.

Tryin' to Reason With Hurricane Season comes to mind. Both the original and acoustic versions are awesome and each bring a slightly different vibe.

I share your sentiment about the "salt, salt, salt" chant.

The other thing is, Jimmy's been performing the "lost verse" much more frequently now; I even heard a JB cover band (the Landsharks Band) do it when they played a show at our local 'Riverfest' this past 4th of July. Can we still properly refer to it as the "lost verse", or should we start referring to it as the "fourth verse" these days?

I would also throw into this discussion the new recording of "In the Shelter" that appears on "Meet Me in Margaritaville," which I think is a good source to look at for songs fitting this category.

I'm not too fond of the newer Saxophones. I like it better without the sax because the whole point is "if we had saxophones".

Well, technically it's the *third* verse...:)

Once upon a time on RM, I heard a version of Margaritaville that had a *different* third verse, that began, "My favorite topic/Is life in the tropics..." I would love to know the rest of the lyrics to that one. I've got my own, but I'd like to know Jimmy's.

I like the remixed "Floridays" on the Hoot sound track. I also agree with the comments about Southern Cross--there was something about that long intro that just made it as "must hear over" for me everytime I would come across it on the ipod. There are several songs on the Meet me in Margaritaville that are nicely tuned up as well.

"Strummin' my six-string on my front porch swing" = verse 1
"Don't know the reason I stayed here all season" = verse 2
"Blew out my flip-flop, stepped on a pop-top" = verse 3
which would make the "lost verse" verse 4, by my count — especially since that's where it's been inserted (*after* the 'flip-flop' verse) on those times when I have heard it.

According to the BN database, here are 2 versions:

Nibblin' on sponge cake,
watchin' the sun bake;
All of those tourists covered with oil.
Strummin' my six string on my front porch swing.
Smell those shrimp–
They're beginnin' to boil.

Wasted away again in Margaritaville,
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt.
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame,
But I know it's nobody's fault.

Don't know the reason,
Stayed here all season
With nothing to show but this brand new tattoo.
But it's a real beauty,
A Mexican cutie, how it got here
I haven't a clue.

Wasted away again in Margaritaville,
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt.
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame,
Now I think,– hell it could be my fault.

I blew out my flip flop,
Stepped on a pop top;
Cut my heel, had to cruise on back home.
But there's booze in the blender,
And soon it will render
That frozen concoction that helps me hang on.

Wasted away again in Margaritaville
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt.
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame,
But I know, it's my own damn fault.
Yes, and some people claim that there's a woman to blame,
And I know it's my own damn fault
_____________________________________________

Margaritaville (live version with the lost verse - from the album "Buffett Live: Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays")

Nibblin' on sponge cake
Watchin' the sun bake
All of you parrotheads covered with oil
(and feathers and signs and fins)
Strummin' my six-string
On my front porch swing
Smell those shrimp, hey they're beginnin' to boil
(Bubble, bubble, bubble, bubble)

Chorus:
Wasted away again in Margaritaville
Searching for my lost shaker of salt
(Salt! Salt! Salt!)
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame
And I know this is somebody's fault

I don't know the reason
I stayed here all season
With nothin' to show but that brand new tattoo
(Hell yes it hurts!)
But it's a real beauty
Oh, I think she might be a Nantucket cutie
Or maybe she's from the Vineyard, I haven't got a clue

Chorus:
Wasted away again in Margaritaville
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt
(Salt! Salt! Salt!)
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame
(I agree with that)
And I know, it's all you women's fault

Coming soon!

Old men in tanktops
Cruising the giftshops
(It's the lost verse!)
Checkin' out Chiquitas down by the shore
(I found her! I found her!)
They dream about weightloss
Wish they could be their own boss
Those three day vacations become such a bore

I blew out my flip-flop
Stepped on a pop-top
I broke my leg twice I had to limp on back home
But there's booze in the blender
And soon it will render
That frozen concoction that helps me hang on
(Hang on! Hang on! Hang on!)

Wasted away again in Margaritaville
(That's where this ship is headed)
Searching for my lost shaker of salt
(Salt! Salt! Salt!)
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame
But I know it's my own damn fault
(That's what the therapist said)
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame
There always is and I know
It's my own damn fault

I stand corrected. But my original question remains —
Since the "lost verse" is getting more and more play, is it appropriate to refer to it as "lost" any longer?

Here is a third version as found on Jimmy's first live album You Had To Be There:

Nibblin’ on sponge cake
Watching the sun bake
All of those tourists covered with oil
Just strummin’ my six string
On my front porch swing
Smell those shrimp
Well, they’re beginnin’ to boil (bubble, bubble, bubble)

Wasted away again in Margaritaville
Searchin’ for my lost shaker of salt
Some people claim that there’s a woman to blame
But I know it’s all Cecil’s fault

I don’t know the reason
Stayed here all season
With nothing to show but a brand new tatoo
But it’s a real beauty
A Mexican cutie
How it got here
I haven’t a clue

Wasted away again in Margaritaville
Searchin’ for my lost shaker of salt
Some people claim that there’s a woman to blame
But I know, it’s all Ronnie’s fault

Old men in tanks tops
Cruisin’ the gift shops
Checking out chiquitas down by the shore (Hey wanna ride in my new car baby?)
They dream about weight loss
Wish they could be their own boss
Those three day vacations become such a bore (Boring, Boring, Boring)

Wasted away again in Margaritaville
Searchin’ for my lost shaker of salt
Some people claim that there’s a woman to blame
But I know, it could be my fault

I blew out my flip flop
Stepped on a pop top
I broke my leg, had to limp on back home
God I still feel pain
I wish I had some cocaine!
But that’s been gone since early this morn’ (Go Get me a little!)

Wasted away again in Margaritaville
Searchin’ for my lost shaker of salt
Some people claim that there’s a woman to blame
But I know, it’s my own damn fault
Yes, and some people claim that there’s a woman
To blame (always is), and I know it’s my own damn fault
