I DO have a comment on appliance color, though. We remodeled the kitchen in our last house and I wanted black appliances. They looked beautiful, but what a PITA to keep clean!!! When the sun shined in you could always see dust on them. I would never, never, ever recommend black appliances to anyone. We recently moved and I replaced the white appliances in the house we bought with stainless steel. Everyone kept telling me how hard stainless would be to keep clean. For me, the stainless steel appliances are a breeze to keep clean compared to the black ones. It might be harder if I had little ones in the house, but that's not the case.
our appliances are all black although the new fridge has stainless doors and the rest of it is black.
We have no problem keeping them clean and I like them better than the white ones we used to have. Different strokes I guess.

When I moved in 2008, every time I went to my refrigerator it was so ... cold. We have a platonic relationship now.

i hate to say it [smilie=asa.gif] but it seems like the days of appliances lasting 20 years or more are long gone, no matter what brand they are :-?

but that's not to say that doing research to get the best deal you can isn't worthwhile. good luck!
As a refrigeration tech, I can say that you're right.
The manufacturers, about 20 years ago, went to the compressor manufacturers and told them to make the valve plates on the compressors thinner to last about 7 years, as most offer a 5 year compressor warranty ( Crosley, a Canadian company does offer a 10 year warranty) and they needed consumers buying more often to make a profit.
As for the french door design, they tend to be more efficient, as cold air rises, and the freezers are on the bottom, so it stays colder, longer. When you open a door on them, the cold air stays down in the bin, whereas with a normal fridge with the freezer on top, when you open a door the cold air escapes from the bottom while warm air enters the freezer at the top. Next time you open your freezer door, put your hand just below the door and feel the cold air escaping. Once you close the door on the freezer, that warm air must be cooled to maintain temp, so the unit works harder, longer.

Most brands are buying compressors from about 3 places, all overseas (Mexico, Korea & Brazil), so there isn't a lot of difference between them, other than inside shelving options or trim. I buy dozens of fridges every year for the hospital I work at, and tend to have better luck with the GE brand but have recently bought a few Sanyo's that seem to work well.
Here's an article I read a while back on the subject...
