I've heard both versions in my travels. It didn't used to be a required part of the song, but I don't mind it- it's a cool kind of interaction.
My favorite part is still the bubble, bubble, bubble

I've been to 30 something shows and have never heard "pass the salt" I'm not a fan of 'salt,salt,salt' either but that was something Jimmy, Tina G, and Nadirah started doing 10-15 years ago on stage and it became the status quo

Been to 50+ shows and don't ever recall the "pass the salt" but just because I don't remember it doesn't mean it didn't happpen.
I actually go take a leak or get a beer when he plays M'ville, Chsburger, or drunk/screw.

However, when alot of the people around me are saying "what the hell is this song?" is when I'm up really jamming and smiling.
"Woman going crazy on Caroline street" did that for me this year in Chicago.
