OK... I give up.
I know that Sister Aidan (JB's 8th grade teacher) is 102 years of age, but could the English
language have changed so much since then?
Does anyone know what "surplus" means when she says ...
"That’s him (JB) as an altar boy, I can tell by the surplus he was wearing,”
Is a surplus a particular garment, or simply that fact alter boys wear shitloads (surplus)
of robes and other Catholic type gobble-de-goop ?
No clue really

Should be spelled "surplice".

Jimmy's not the only former altar boy around here!
Back in the day, it was worn over a cassock
(below left) so the end result looked like this
(below right):
Priests would sometime wear the combination as well, with the addition of the white Roman collar insert at the neck:

Yup, I noticed that wrong word right away....
We used to wear a surplice as part of a church choir outfit(Anglican). I think the underpart wasn't a real cassock, though, probably just a skirt. I was only in the choir to help fill up the space: "Please don't sing loudly, Barbara!"

Is that
"scarring" or
"scaring" — either one could be appropriate.

I'm sure the author of the story on Sister Aiden just spell checked and surplice turned into surplus.
As a lapsed Episcopalian I spent a few altar boy years wearing one. Sneaking a few sips of the sacramental wine was a big thrill 48 years ago.
Come to think of it sneaking a sip now would be too.

If I can find it, I'll post the picture of Jimmy dressed as an altar(ed) boy. The picture is hanging in the Margaritaville NOLA.

Didn't they use it in the childhood pics of him and Mac during "Back where I come from" a few years ago? Or was it just his communion picture? So cute
