The crowd never heard the crash. It wasn't until around 5am that the copter was reported missing and 7am when the debris was found utilizing the Bell 206B Jet Ranger's emergency-locater transmitter signal. Killed with Stevie were Bobby Brooks, Clapton's Hollywood agent; pilot Jeff Brown; Clapton's assistant tour manager, Colin Smythe; and Clapton's bodyguard, Nigel Browne. Clapton and brother Jimmie later had the task of identifying the bodies, 4 years to the day from father Jimmie Lee Vaughan's death.
I was living in the Dallas area at that time. I remember that morning vividly. I was on my way to work when the first announcement hit. Stevie was dead. I was so shocked and shook up I pulled over and wept. I still weep, I'm crying as I type this.
Don McClean's song American refers to "the day the music died" and until that day whenever I heard it I thought of Feb. 3, 1959, the day that Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, Richie Valens were killed in a plane crash.
From August 27, 1990 forward for me The Day the Music Died will always be the day the world and Texas lost Stevie Ray Vaughan.
