I am generally not a risk taker, a result of being raised by very conservative parents in the 1950s and 1960s, but often wish I were....... [smilie=grrrrrr.gif]

Life is too full of opportunities and too short on time. Now at age 57 that is becoming crystal clear......and somewhat scary for me..... [smilie=hello.gif]

Like Wayne Gretsky has been quoted: "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take."

May your conscience and your heart be your guide. If you are honest with yourself you simply must believe you will make the right decision for you.

All the best......

My knee jerk reaction what that no, I'm not......but upon closer evaluation....I would say yes, I am.

I left home when I was 17 because I needed to.....that worked out.
I left my secure gov't job because I was fed up......that worked out.
I left my secure marriage because I was fed up......that's working out.

Right now, it would have to be something pretty amazing to get me to move because I'm very happy with my life as it is, but I would never say never.

Visualize what you want......and see where the offer fits in.

To me, the bigger risk is going into business with family members. Money (and a potential lack there of, or for that matter a surplus of it and who is entitled to how much) ruins lots of relationships. That is what I would take the most time to consider.
Take me for what I am, a star newly emerging.

When I leap, I leap blindly and in a big way and not often to land safely on my feet. If you have hesitation, that's only natural. As human beings we tend to want to live in 'comfort zones' thanks to lots of evolutionary need for self preservation.

However, its important to remember that even if you fall flat you will no doubt have stories to tell you wouldn't otherwise, and you will open yourself to new experiences and people that right now you probably can't fathom. Go for it, but never with an expectation, make sure you're mindful to separate the irrational fear that might be stopping you from the practical realities of what you need to make it work. My favorite quote is from Mark Twain and helps me in times like these:

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do."

(Goes on to say: "So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” but the first sentence is the hook.)

As someone who has been in business with family, I agree with Jack...you have multiple things to consider. Is the business viable? Are my relationships ( marriage and with sis) secure enough to endure a failing business, do you want to move to Chicago? Working with family is damb hard, I doubt I'd do it again.

Money is there, business plan is viable. But we would not be full equal partners due to money. It's the working with family and unequally yoked thing that is actually causing me to hesitate. I have other business plans here that I've been working on that are starting to show some fruit. If I walk away from them I it would be likely that I would not be able to build them back up. However, I would never be able to come up with the amount of financing for any project on my own equaling what is being offered here.
My sis and I have very different styles and we would likely compliment each other. But the uneven partnership might prevent that from happening. She hates that she lives in Chicago so far from everybody and hopes this would lure somebody to moving closer to her. I would hate to see our families end up hating each other though. It is quite possible that I won't do it because of this. I'm just hoping that I'm hesitating for the right reasons and not because I'm afraid of trying new things. (which I am a bit) In addition my children are grown and planted in this area. I know it would be very hard for me to put this many miles between me and them.

I probably wouldn't enter in a business venture with a family member.

Other than that, I am generally a risk taker.

I tend to agree...

To me a 'risk' is "the great unknown"... however, there usually is a quantifiable track record with families in business together (especially unequal 'partnerships') that must be considered and is a 'known'.

I never considered myself to be much of a risk taker. Then I quit my job and went to law school when I was 39 years old. Kind of shot that theory out of the water.

I take a lot of risks. Never a risk that I couldn't afford though. Some paid off others fizzled out. As far as going into business with family, personally I wouldn't do it. Does your sister need you to pack up and move to Chicago to make the biz successful? Sounds like you would be giving up a lot to move away from the family. Is this the type of business that would work in your area? Since she is in exile from everyone, why doesn't she move?

I know as I type it I'm just not going to do it. But I suspect it's possible I'll kick myself. Sis can't move because her husband has too many years invested in his job. My husband is currently, unfortunately not working, at least for another company. He would be very likely to find a much better paying position in her area but he hasn't been out of work long enough for us to normally consider a move. The scary economy perhaps has me considering a move that I normally wouldn't. I just finished school and am looking for a position. However, we have a fairly busy small business here that provides handy-man, hvac and home cleaning to mostly non-resident home owners.
This is a plug for any NJ/Pa/NY area persons who are aware of a company with a need for a highly skilled commercial hvac/r tech.

Chicago is a PERFECT place to come. Cold crappy weather, lots of UNEMPLOYMENT, TONS of Illegal Immigrants. Start learning Spanish and Polish, because they infest the city. Oh yeah, if your a smoker.... Be prepared to pay $10 bucks a pack, oh yeah, and gas right now in the city is over $3.25 a gallon..... Stay out of Chicrapgo whatever you do.
Did you hear the one about me being a punk?
Did you hear the one about me being a drunk?
Did you hear the one about me losing my nerve?
Or how I'm just another f**** sheep in the herd?
Did you hear the one about me giving a s***?
Cause if I ever did I don't remember it.

:o :o :o Having just started a new venture myself I can feel your trepidation....
For us, we are fully self funded but on an equal basis....... Being self funded I think the equal status is important so that no one feels they are lesser or greater than any other voice. Also, while we are all colleges and friends, we are not family....we have had some good arguements and are all the better for them. Than doesn;'t always work with family as the long, usually intimate relationship feels old stuff (emotional) into an argument....that is not always a good thing.....

Anyway, in our case it truely was a F*ck it moment...... Take the leap and trust your cape!!!! (besides, where else ya gonna put your money?!?!?!? Stock market>>>    Real Ewstate...    )
