Things You Can Do to Make Life Smoother

1.) DO NOT TOP OFF YOUR GAS TANK (unless zombies are attacking and this is the last station for xxxhundred miles)
Just like you wouldn't drive around with a handful of dead bodies in the trunk, your mileage will improve if you do not spend lots of time driving with a full tank. Gasoline is heavy; let someone else haul it. Just carry what you need.
FURTHERMORE, topping off your tank is a great way to screw up a minor but expensive emissions-control device: the vapor management thingie that does some stuff with the canister vent solenoid whichamahoojie. It's like your pancreas. You'll never think about it until you've f**** with it.

2.) BE A KID, PLAY WITH THE BUTTONS
The most commonly replaced (and expensive) element of a dishwasher is not some piece of plumbing. It's the control board. Frequently the buttons get screwed up because the liquid gooey gunk inside them solidifies or leaks out from lack of circulation. So every once in awhile play with them (not all night, it's not like your naughty bits).

And if you inflate your tires to 60 psi, you can get better mileage.
And if you take the car out of gear (or turn the engine off) and coast down hills, you can get better mileage.
And if you see the light ahead is red and let up on the gas, even if you're a block or so away, and coast to the light, you can get better mileage.
You *CAN* get carried away with this, you know.

Gasoline is not that heavy; depending on blend and additives, somewhere between 6 to 6½ pounds per gallon. The tank on my 1997 Chrysler Town and Country minivan is listed as 19.8 gallons (I'll round it up to 20 gallons) so when full, its contents weigh between 120 and 130 pounds.

Curb weight of said vehicle, which is the weight of the vehicle with its options and all consumables (including oil, tranny fluid, and fuel) but excluding passengers and cargo, is listed as 4190 pounds — of which 125 pounds ±5 pounds is the fuel. 125 pounds is just a tick under 3% of the total curb weight.

Not really enough to worry about, in my book. I'd rather have the gas when I want it rather than have to spend time looking for it while driving around on fumes.

Is this at all related to kids pushing MY buttons when we are in the car?

I always wanted to know what that was called.

How does not filling up my tank make my life smoother? Having to stop for gas several times per year is an inconvenience.

see, I still subscribe to the "buy gas when it's cheap and fill up so you have more money for rum" way of thinking.... :)

(Oh, and I love to play with the buttons on the dishwasher. Thank you for giving me a reason now!) :)

1) That's what we do in the airline business. Hauling too much extra fuel is a waste of fuel. However, I am committed to surviving the Zombie Apocalypse so I always fill 'er up.

2) I never use half the buttons on my dishwasher (or microwave). You have inspired me to change my ways. I used to save the colored ink in my printers until someone pointed out that if you never use it the print heads on the color cartridges will get gummed up with dried ink and not work when you need them.

Any more tips? :)

Topping off versus filling up.

It's OK to 'fill up.' But my caveat is against topping off. (OK, the weight argument is a little spurious. Thanks, BB, for a little perspective.)
But topping off is not good. It's bad for your car, it leads to spills and vapor loss, and there's no sense in buying another half gallon, just because it's $0.05 cheaper than the place down the street.
Maybe if you top off you can go an extra 10 miles before filling up again. I hope you never need it.
When the pump shuts off, leave it alone...
...or don't, it's really your choice.
