Copper Lee Standard Oil - Kykuit
Copper Lee Carnegie Steel - Skibo
Died - September 8, 2010
Kykuit was our 7 yr old golden. He was diagnosed with mass cell cancer Thanksgiving weekend 2009, he went through 2 surgeries, 4 months of chemo (2 different cycles) and up until the last three days of his life he was happy and very active. Even when he was being treated he brought joy to a very dreary oncologist office and was well loved by his many doctors and assistants. He made the 45 minute drive to his specialist on Wed, he even jumped into the truck, but it was obvious that he would never make the ride home. We had to put him down there. We were very upset because we wanted to do it at our regular vet as they loved him too and called us weekly for updates, we wanted them to have the chance to say goodbye. It was a long ride home.
Skibo was 11. He was getting older and was losing body mass in his back side. There wasn't anything diagnosed on him yet but we knew he was getting older and was having problems with his back legs, we were giving him supplements for his legs which seemed to help a little. He was at the vet last week, had an x-ray, there was a spot on his stomach but the vet felt we could wait a couple of weeks to do an ultrasound since he was doing well. He came downstairs for breakfast that AM and didn't show any signs of problems, ate, went outside, did his thing and came in for treats. He went back upstairs and laid in his normal spot. He didn't want to come downstairs when we left for the vet with Ky. I attributed it to him knowing what was coming. When we got home he came and laid at the top of the steps, it was obvious that he knew. He was downstairs at dinnertime and laid in the middle of the kitchen floor as he always did. He never got up. My wife and I laid with him most of the afternoon and evening, he was very comforting. We spoke to our vet at 5:30 because we were concerned that he was getting dehydrated and hadn't been outside all day. They closed at 6 and suggested we try to get him to drink and referred us to an emergency hospital if we needed to take him in before 10am. His heart stopped at 8:30. I was holding him. It was a horrible day.
They were goldens, need I say more? The house is empty now. I've been working from home for the past 2 years, it isn't easy working in an empty house. The Friday Starbucks run will never be the same without them. Their favorite pastry was the pumpkin loaf. Skibo was incredible, he hadn't worn a leash since he was 2. When outside the yard he was by my side and was always well behaved. He was everything a Golden should be. Ky too was great, he was a heaping pile of personality. Both were always smiling. Our home will never be the same. They made the last 11 years wonderful.

I have an 8 year old male Golden now (Buc a.k.a. Buccaneer). And a 2 year English Setter female (Sandy Beach).
Before we adopted our current Golden we had another Golden (Corky) for over 13 years.
Goldens are far and away my favorite dogs. I telecommute also. We waited a little over a year between Corky's death and when we decided to rescue Buc at age 4 from an animal rescue foster family.
That one year working from home with no dog always with me was terrible. The house was so empty. I know how you must feel.
When you are ready, adopt/rescue another dog. I wish I hadn't waited so long to do so.
As my all too wise kids told me when we adopted Buc ......
"You know Dad. We were lucky to have had Corky, because he taught us how to love dogs.
And now we get to rescue and love Buc. That's what Corky wants us to do."
Smart kids.

I can't imagine the loss of both in one day. It seems clear that you and the goldens shared lots of love.

I am so sorry for your loss of both Kykuit and Skibo. I can't imagine how empty your house and heart both are. I hope you can find some comfort that you were able to comfort Skibo while Skibo was comforting you. And that you were able to enjoy and embrace almost an additional year with Kykuit is an added bonus even though the past 9 1/2 months flew buy and probably seemed like endless trips to the vets.
Lots of fin power going your way to try and help you through both of these horrible events.
