Isn't Dubai where they built the island that looks like a palm tree; have built (or are building) the world's tallest building; have all sorts of other 'different' (sounds better than 'weird') architecture; now have the world's largest tower clock; and are hosting golf and tennis tournaments, car races, and other events left and right? And now this.

Can you say "conspicuous consumption"??

EXACTLY what I was gonna post. How come the taliban doesn't go after them for being 'conspicuously comsumptive' now instead of America ? Or am I comparing rotten apples to oranges ? 8)
Isn't that also the place where they are 'building' lots of little connecting islands to put houses or condos on ?

Anytime you want to stop supporting their lavish lifestyle, just stop driving. :)

If that's too radical, get a high-MPG car and lobby your representatives for better land-use and transit. Oh, and buy organic produce, because the factory-farmed stuff uses petroleum-derived fertilizers.

They are aware that they will one day run out of oil. After that they need something to bring in cash.
This was what they decided they could do to pull in tourist $$$
