International Talk Like A Pirate Day
Just wanted to let everyone know that Sunday September 19th is International Talk Like A Pirate Day. It would be cool if all post on that day were in pirate talk if nothing but an Arrgghhh! So, Let's hear it!
I made enough money to buy North Jackson but I p*** it away so fast... never meant to last.

Re: International Talk Like A Pirate Day
Arrrrgggg....thanks for letting me know!
Here's an interesting question. Other than those punks in small boats off the coast of west Africa...when we think of pirates we think of Blackbeard and those who sailed the high seas in the 17th and 18th century. We have no voice recordings of them. How do we know what they sounded like? I'm thinking they did more coughing than talking from all the TB that circled the globe back then

I think it comes from an old Pirate film and the voice the actor used, perhaps Robert Newton in Treasure Island. I know i'm sadJollyMon66 wrote:Arrrrgggg....thanks for letting me know!

Re: International Talk Like A Pirate Day
While I'm sure "pirate talk" did include a lot of nautical terms and phrases — they were sailors, after all — I'm equally sure pirates had their own patois, depending on where they originated, where they were sailing and the make-up of the crew. I certainly wouldn't expect the Barbary pirates or a Frenchman like Jean Lafitte, for example, to flawlessly speak the King's English.JollyMon66 wrote:You may be right...a lot of the pirates of old were English but I don't think they spoke the Queen's Englishhe came from london wrote:I think it comes from an old Pirate film and the voice the actor used, perhaps Robert Newton in Treasure Island. I'm also guessing that as the crews took on more men of all nationalities, the on-board vocabulary changed as necessary with various words of the newcomers' languages blending in with what was already spoken, resulting in an early version of Esperanto.

In a more appropriate tone, the website "MentalFloss.com" posted a story about 'Talk Like a Pirate Day' this coming Sunday, with a few embedded YouTube videos. It's worth a look.
