My trip is not too far away! I can almost taste those beignets [smilie=mla.gif] Anyone ever try the grenade drink from Tropical Isle?

I had several grenades during my only trip to New Orleans. I don't remember too much. Maybe that's a good thing.

Fun New Orleans tour- we went and checked out the Old New Orleans Rum Distillery. Good times. Tour is $10, there are $2 off coupons floating around on maps and such, and if you call ahead you can arrange a free shuttle from the French Market. You have to call ahead for the shuttle- it is free but by pre-arranged pick up only.

Very fun way to spend an hour or so, with rum samples and such. It's at least minorly educational 8) and we are always looking for something out of the ordinary in New Orelans. We really enjoyed it. You can look up my review on Trip Advisor, where I also post as OttoCal for more details.

I had vacationed there with my wife and my now oldest daughter who was a tiny keet at almost 3. We stayed for a week and our vacation ended 5 days before Katrina hit. Just dumb lucky to have not been there before the Hurricane because my wife decided she wanted a week between vacation and her return to teaching instead of coming back a day or two before the start of the school year which would have meant we would have been there during the disaster.

So my NOLA experience may be different than most as we went for a family vacation so even though I was on Bourbon Street (Which in the early am smells like a restroom) I didn’t get to get wild and crazy but to be honest with you I think that’s all hyped anyway as New Orleans is a city with so much more than just that one street.

Anyways like it’s been said Café Dumond is a must. We did it everyday. The Aquarium is world class and beyond impressive, After Katrina hit and most of the marine life died we were heartbroken over the loss of such beautiful life. But it has come back and is better than ever.

We took a trip across the river to this manufacturer of the Mardi Gras parade floats. Real works of craftsmanship.’

In addition we took a ride upriver to Audubon Zoo. It is my favorite zoo outside of the one in DC and the Bronx Zoo. A world class facility with a diverse selection of wild life.

A swamp tour is a must and my daughter still remembers when she got to hold a baby gator along with the tour guide throwing a marshmallows in the swamp in order to get the gators to come out and play.

The people could have not been nicer to us. Not one rude person we interacted with. I have warm feeling for those people who call NOLA home.

Finally the food! Oh good God the food was so good it converted my vegetarian wife into a meat eater! Thank the Creole spirits for Po’Boys, blackened catfish, jambalaya, bread pudding and all the other delights that wonderful city has to offer!
"Trying to reason with Hurricane Season!"
