Heading to New Orleans for just a weekend (Thursday night through Sun afternoon) - taking the teen. I have not been there in over 20 years. I know I want to do the cemetary tour but am trying to come up with some other attractions. I was also thinking about a cooking school for a few hours since both hubby and keet love to cook...Preservation Hall is a must....

Any ideas from my peeps in the area? I cannot even remember the name of the restaurants at which we ate...suggestions for restaurants?

Thanks...

The paddle boat lunch or dinner cruise is cool..a little pricey
The house of Voodoo is a must!!l Lots of fun stuff to buy in there..
for the teenager Hard Rock is also good..
You can also go see where the Mardi-Gras floats are made- that is really wild just the amount of work that goes in to them.
New Orleans also has an Aquarium and a nice Zoo...
but for me the best fun of all is just people watching when the sun goes down

Enjoy! and have a Hurricane for me!!!

WHO DAT!!!

We looked into the cooking school thing very, very carefully before we went last time- we have some avid cooks. The main one that is in the FQ is more of a cooking demonstration- you are in the audience (say, state fair or small festival style) and the chef is demo-ing recipes in front of you, you get tastes etc, but it is not hands on. So we skipped it- we were more interested in the hands-on style and didn't find that offered. There may be something now- but read the desciptions carefully, sometimes it takes a bit of reading between the lines or interpretation to understand what you are getting.

Cemetary tour- really cool, but use a private guide with a guard/driver or a group tour that you have checked out ahead of time for safety. Assume that you are going to be a target there and leave your valuables back at the hotels. Seriously. Tourists wandering around alone there set themselves up for potential unsafe situations, and also don't get the whole experience- the history and information that a guide can give really make the visit.

I like Coop's Place across from Margaritaville for a French Quarter joint that is inexpensive and fun (service with an attitude and all that), and Port of Call on Esplanade (pronounced like lemonade, not the Frenchy way)for great huge burgers with baked potatoes.

Go down Bourbon St. to Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop (the oldest bar in that whole area of the country) and order a Voodoo Daquiri (like a grape sno-cone with a kick). It's also one of the most haunted places in the U.S.....take a camera and take pictures, then see what shows up that wasn't there at the time.
One place I didn't get to go to that was on my list: Rock & Bowl, for the live music AND bowling.
I was wondering: is Patout's still there on Bourbon St. ?
And the French Market down there by Margaritaville ? I loved going through there.

Love Coop's! I had excellent shrimp creole there...yum. Also, go down the block to Molly's at the Market for their frozen Irish Coffee!

Two years ago when I went to Pardi Gras, Rick (12volt Rick) and I went to Lafitte's for the midnight pirate toast Friday night. Some woman came in while we were there and we started talking to her. I forget if it was Rick or me but one of us asked if she was there for Pardi Gras. She said "No, I'm here to get drunk and get laid."

OK, Larry's comments aside... I couldn't stand it anymore and just booked a trip to go back to New Orleans. Not until March, but that was the most sensible time for us to go. Plus, I had a coupon. I'm all about the coupons.

Thinking a Plantation tour this time, anybody like a certain one? Or else maybe we'll just drink. haha.

We did the "swamp" tour. It was better than I thought it would be.
plus it gave our livers a chance to rest.

We did a really fun swamp tour a couple of years ago- totally entertaining guide, fun baby gator in a bucket on the back of the boat, and at one point I was just snapping pictures of some swamp vegetation and spanish moss, and then when my mom was looking at them on the computer at home said 'oh, what a great photo of that owl'. I hadn't even noticed it!!!

Don't forget that it is legal to take minors into bars until 11pm. This means that you can frequently take them to catch the early show at a number of musical venues that they wouldn't be allowed in otherwise.
