New computer (and a WHOLE heap of problems :( )

Post by Glorfindel7 »

Yesterday evening my trusty 6 year old computer bit the dust for the final time
(So I was forced to make some quick decisions, as to getting a new computer....)

I went to the local Fry's and picked up a nice Lenovo laptop (I figured it was probably about time I got a little more portable  )
That's when my problems began...

1. Couldn't get a wireless connection because I couldn't remember the access code... therefore I had to reinstall the router software and attempt to reconfigure.
2. On first attempt discovered that I needed a "wired" connection...ouch :(.... now I had to call my sister in law to see if she remembered it :(
3. Finally I took some time to look at the left side of the laptop, lo and behold a WIRED card, AND wireless card in the same computer :D
4. Next, tried to log into the "network" to grant access to the router had to call at&t for assistance
5. tech guy reset my network password, unfortunately didn't tell me that the router needed it reset as well as the wireless connection STILL didn't work.
6. next time I connected the wired connection, discovered that the at&t tech internet page came up to reset the password in the modem itself.

7. I'm finally back glad this didn't take too long

whenever configuring a home broadband router you need to connect via wired connection as the wireless is not configured until you configure it during the setup (this is a security feature)..I have yet to see a laptop that does not have a wired NIC as well as a wireless, some people confuse the wired NIC port with an old school 56k modem since they look similar (the wired connection is RJ45 and phone is normally RJ14, which will plug into the RJ45)

if the new laptop is running Windows 7 you can export/backup any wireless connection via Manage Wireless Networks. Just select the connection you want to export and select Properties, on the first tab there is a link to Copy the Network Profile to USB Flash Drive which, once completed, can be used to add the network to XP, Vista, or 7.

that would be the WEP, WPA or WPA2 access code for the network, which is what is used to secure the connection so that only those that know the code for the network can attach to it, as there can be multiple networks running within the range of your wireless card.

I agree with the laptop having a wired/wireless connection, (so in my defense I can say I was too tired to check )
But some of the "netbook" type computers (atom, et al)...DONT come with a wired card, and some don't even have a DVD drive :o

He lost me at configuring the configured configure. I think I need to send my IT guy a present at Christmas.
