Leaving the country traveling with meds....

Post by Johnny's Lounge »

Hi everybody!

You can only live on pizza, Chinese, fries, beers & Boatdrinks before time catches up to you and bites you in the ass!

Here's a question for you people that leave the country with perscription meds (pills) like blood pressure, diabetic, antibiotics etc.

We're heading to Cancun in a few weeks. I think you need to bring them in the marked containers from the pharmacy. Do you need anything else? I also have a diabetic test kit. Do you have any problems carrying them into Mexico or back out again? I only plan on bringing enough for the trip.

First time for us actually staying in another country (other than Canada but not recently) in a long, long time on a trip. Usually we bounce around on a ship.Sounds like a dumb question to me but I don't like any surprises.

Thanks in advance for any info.

That should do it. If your bottles are large you might give the pharmacy a call. They get these kind of calls all the time.

Never had a problem carrying the pills in their containers in and out of Mexico. :)

Just make sure you have everything (including over-the-counter meds) in its original marked bottle. Do you have insulin syringes? If so I might be inclined to bring some kind of a doctor's or pharmacist's certification but otherwise just the marked bottles.

No problems with marked bottles and also no problems with test kit.

Take extra of your meds however. You never know when you might get delayed on the way back.

Be sure to put your meds in your carry on bag in case the rest of your baggage gets lost or delayed.

I would carry a copy of a letter from my physician listing all prescribed meds. In fact, multiple copies.

We have to get our prescriptions mail order for 90 day periods. They send them in these gigantic bottles...even if they don't fill a third of the bottle. They are a royal pain to have to travel with. If traveling within the country, I put them in a 7 day container and hope that no one says anything. For foreign travel, it is best to leave them in the humongo but official bottles. I still take my 7 day container so that I can keep track of what I've taken (and what day it is  )

A friend of mine's husband (now ex) was arrested for stupidity, I mean for carrying a controlled substance without a prescription. He got stopped at airport security because he "forgot" that he had a knife in his boot. He was asked three times if he had anything and he said no. When they searched him and found the knife, they arrested him and as they searched his luggage they found his medicine bottle that he had dumped 3 days worth of various meds into, including a xanex. The bottle didn't say xanex so they charged him with that too.

Good advice. Always keep in original dispensed containers. Always keep in carry on luggage. I've had my luggage lost on multiple occsions and would be out of luck if I had my meds in them.

can you contact your Rx company and request smaller bottles for travel?
