Re: Last Film Watched?
My favorite movie of the year so far except for True Grit. If you're a fan of the original series of movies and were disappointed by Tim Burton's "reimagining" (which I think most everyone was), then I think you'll love this one. I wasn't all impressed by the previews I saw back in the spring but I was blown away by this. Andy Serkis, who played the voice of Gollum in the Lord of the Rings series gives voice to Caesar here. The special effects team used the same techniques utilized in Avatar in order to capture Serkis' facial characteristics. Obviously, there's a lot of CGI going on here but there's times you forget about it (at least I did), which is a good sign of the advantages of it.sonofabeach wrote:I did not even know that it was out yet. The Adventures of Sinbad.
If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Woody Allen double feature
"Small Town Crooks"
"Bullets Over Broadway"
"Witness to the Prosecution" Charles Laughton's performance alone is enough to see this movie.
"The Lady Vanishes" Stuck with a PBS print. Couldn't get the Criterion release via Netflix.

Re: Last Film Watched?

Even though Rise of the Planet of the Apes doesn't necessarily adhere very closely to the original films or the novel by Pierre Boulle, it is somewhat drawn from this movie, when the apes begin to revolt against mankind. Even though I own the complete box set (including a making of documentary called Behind the Planet of the Apes), my interest in the movies drops off significantly following Escape from the Planet of the Apes. Still, I thought it worth revisiting this one just out of curiosity's sake and yes, it's just as bad as I remember. The one saving grace is Roddy McDowell himself who does a splendid job in the lead role as Cesar. The movie itself comes across as hokey and heavy handed, just as I remembered it but it was still worth revisiting just for fun.

I knew next to nothing about this one going in and to be honest, had never even heard of it before seeing it on the shelf at my local Blockbuster. It's not your typical sci-fi tale and is definitely worth the cost of a rental but I can't think of much else to say about it beyond that without giving too much of it away. It's certainly one of those films that the less you know about it before watching it, the better as it has some very intriguing twists and turns that you may not catch onto at first.

This one wasn't quite as good as I was expecting but it's still well worth watching, particularly for anyone that's moved by the connection they have to music. The downside to it to me is that it felt more like a poorly executed movie of the week than the indie gem it touts itself to be. Still a good movie though, and very emotionally moving.

Some first timers for me
Sidney Lumet's
"Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead"
"The Adjustment Bureau"
Overall a decent popcorn movie. Old-fashioned romance mixed with sci fi.
"Harlan County USA"
Still stands as one of the best documentary movies ever made.
"Wild Oranges"
Silent movie by King Vidor

Re: Last Film Watched?
Captain America would be the last film I watched at a movie theatre and though I am a big fan or Marvel, I did not enjoy it that much. Probably because the story was not all that interesting. The highlight for me would be the last series of clips after the credits, which became the short teaser to next years The Avengers. It is sad that Iron Man would not be holding his own knowing that the character became big as compared to its counterparts.
