Maggie Smith is really good in Best Exotic Marigold Hotel too.
Great lines:
"At my age I can't plan that far ahead; I don't even buy green bananas."

So is Dev Patel.
In India we have a saying "Everything will be alright in the end, so if it's not alright, it's not yet the end."

Re: Last Film Watched?

Pretty intense viewing and at times quite difficult to watch but it's well worth sticking around for the conclusion.

Recently, caught the scene in the movie where the kid ( M. Broderick) is trying to rig the pay phone booth (to make a free phone call) with a pop top tab he found near the phone booth in the parking lot.Tiki Torches wrote:
For a movie that came out in 1983 WarGames has aged remarkably well. Probably because it doesn't fall for any of the same plot devices that were so popular back then. Sure, computers have come a long way since then but overall the story stands the test of time very well.
MY POINT IS: I had to explain to my daughter about what phone booths and pop top tabs were.

I was attending an exhibition for Yep Roc Records' 15th anniversary recently in Carrboro, NC and noticed a Mom showing her toddler a working turntable they had on display. Thing is, vinyl and phonographs haven't completely disappeared from the landscape (thank goodness) but it was still a cool thing to see.A1Jay wrote:Recently, caught the scene in the movie where the kid ( M. Re: Last Film Watched?

I thought I had a pretty good idea of what I was getting into with this one but just had to see for myself since I'd heard such good things. I do have an appreciation for art films but I was never really able to get into this one. I had some idea of how dour it would be beforehand but it was just too depressing (not to mention long) for me.

I remember this getting mixed reviews when it first came out but I must say I really enjoyed it. Makes me want to revisit the Alien films and maybe even Chariots of the Gods.

Re: Last Film Watched?
Finally broke down and watched a movie through iTunes. This is also coming out on DVD, Blu-Ray, etc. though I'm not sure of the actual release date. Since the era I got turned onto skateboarding in is so well represented by Stacy Peralta's previous documentary, Dogtown and Z Boys, it will always remain closest to my heart but this makes for a nice sequel, even though it's not really a sequel. However, it does catch up with the state of skateboarding in the 80's and how some of the pros I grew up watching parlayed their latter years into new careers. Bones Brigade: An Autobiography shows how Stacy went in search of untapped talent by assembling a group of unknown skaters for his team. At the time, the only thing he had to go by was his innate ability to pick up on their potential, even though none of them had really started to show it yet. Pretty amazing for a group of skaters that would go on to become known worldwide, especially Tony Hawk. I was still skateboarding in the 80's but wasn't really as familiar with the pro skaters anymore other than Hawk, Christian Hosoi, Lance Mountain, Bob McDill (inventor of the "McTwist") and Steve Caballero, all of whom are members of the Bones Brigade. This is an outstanding documentary and it goes a long way towards painting a very realistic picture of what goes on behind the scenes of each skater and the emotional investments each of them made in the sport. Even though Tony Hawk is the best known of the bunch he was often put down, especially by members of his own peer group. This was because he was deemed to be too technical and lacked the natural finesse that is inherent in most skateboarders. Rodney Mullen is a complete natural and watching him literally dance with his skateboard and invent many of the tricks that are all sort of taken for granted now is a wonder to behold. The downside is, he gave up skateboarding a couple of times, all at the insistence of his Dad (who he obeyed) despite that fact that he's such a gifted skateboarder. On the more critical side it seems that Peralta draws emotions out of some of the skaters towards the end of the film that feel somewhat unnatural. I have no doubt that they genuinely may have felt moved to tears but something about it just feels out of place. Also, when making a film about your own team it must be next to impossible to remain subjective about the whole thing. Stacy does an outstanding job of that but still, I'd love to see the eras of 70's and 80's skateboarding depicted in Dogtown and Z Boys and Bones Brigade looked at from another angle. I have no doubt that skaters such as Peralta, Tony Alva, Jay Adams, Tony Hawk, etc. were on the cutting edge when it came to developing new tricks and manevers and pushing the envelope in general but something tells me there's another story to be told here. In the meantime, I think Peralta has done a remarkable job, it just feels a bit one sided.

Re: Last Film Watched?

This wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting it to be. I think the Peter Parker character is probably closer to how he was portrayed in the comic book as far as being a smart ass. That said, I still have an affinity for the character Tobey McGuire created and the original series of films that he starred in, especially the first two. I didn't think the third one was bad but when you get into evil twin territory it's usually a sign that the writers are already running out of ideas.

One of those movies I've been hearing about for years but I've never seen it. I understand it's pretty polarizing but I must say I liked it, probably because I currently reside in a college town and you still see a lot of this same sort of sh*t all of the time. It also kind of stands apart in the way that it was filmed. I would imagine most people decide whether they like it or not within the first 20 minutes or so when they become aware of what direction the movie's going to take. I stayed around to the very end. Still, I liked Dazed and Confused much better and even that movie has it's flaws, or at least scenes I couldn't relate to. My high school experience wasn't nearly as violent as what is depicted in that film. In fact, it wasn't violent at all.

It wasn't the Earth moving masterpiece that the original was, and I did not expect it to be, but it was still good.
My son loved it.

LIFE OF PI
I am not at all the religious sort, and it's a mistake to go into this one thinking that's the underlying theme
but after just seeing one today....all I can say about this one is "wow..."
over-simplified comparisons with Avatar don't do this film near justice.
IMO, a Best Picture nominee along with all the perfectly done FX

Re: Last Film Watched?

Not too bad of a movie, should get some oscar nods, especially for Daniel Day Lewis and Tommy Lee Jones. Theater was unbearably warm, and way too crowded for my tastes ( im one of those people who prefer to go to a early 10am showing when the theater isn't even half full). The only other thing that bothered me was when the movie was over, the entire theater clapped. Does that bother anyone else besides me?
Did you hear the one about me being a punk?
Did you hear the one about me being a drunk?
Did you hear the one about me losing my nerve?
Or how I'm just another f**** sheep in the herd?
Did you hear the one about me giving a s***?
Cause if I ever did I don't remember it.

I have jokingly clapped many times at movies. I fact, I stood up and did the slow clap bulding to a fast clap at Red Dawn the other dayNighthawk wrote: [The only other thing that bothered me was when the movie was over, the entire theater clapped.
