Re: Last Film Watched?
Can't say I'm bothered by people clapping at the end of a movie but it does seem a little odd. I haven't seen it happen all that often but it did occur at a couple of movies I saw this year: Beasts of the Southern Wild and Celebration Day (the current concert film of Led Zeppelin's reunion concert at the 02 Arena in London back in 2007). Back in the late 70's when I went to see The Song Remains the Same at one of those midnight movie showings it was preceded by a short film called A Tribute To Lynyrd Skynyrd which was very timely as it was not long after Skynyrd's plane crash in '77. During the closing credits the fellow in front of me struck a match and held it up (guess he didn't have a lighter). These days folks hold up their cell phones, can't say I've ever seen that happen in a movie theatre though, just at concerts.

Does that bother anyone else besides me?
Only time I stood up and clapped at a movie was at the end of Titanic. Me and my neighbor had heard that Leo dies at the end, and for shits and giggles, we stood up and clapped when he sank to his death. Unfortuntly we received a nice shower of popcorn and soda. The plus side is though, most of it ended up with the two gals we were with LOL.

Re: Last Film Watched?

Even though it has it's flaws I loved this movie. For one thing, I enjoy how refreshing it is to watch something like this compared to your usual romantic comedy humdrum. Not that Take That Waltz is a comedy mind you but it is billed as one. Probably because people simply don't know how to categorize movies such as this. Reading the reviews at Amazon I found it funny how some people took great offense at a prolonged nude scene while others thought it was the best part of the movie. I get the impression that a lot of people are so accustomed to Hollywood endings and the usual fodder that makes up mainstream cinema that they simply don't know how to process any movie that dares to deviate from the norm. That's unfortunate because there's a lot of movies being made out there that are deserving of the same sort of attention as the blockbusters. There's also some real crap but that's most certainly not the case here. It also doesn't hurt that there's a great soundtrack. As for the movie itself, it's a relationship drama and how one weighs the price of forfeiting something that feels comfortable for a relationship that may (or may not) be more suited to them. Whether Michelle Williams' character Margot makes the right decision is left up to the viewer to decide so if you like tidy endings this movie may not be for you. Like I said, it does have it's shortcomings but overall I really enjoyed this movie.

Re: Last Film Watched?
Even though I've seen the movie before, I watched, "The Smartest Guys In The Room," last night. Intersetingly enough, the same banks that are fresh in our memories from the predatory mortgage fiasco also were willing participants with Enron. As a Californian, I'm still amazed how the federal government allowed a business to manipulate the cost of energy and set our economy back by charging us $38 BILLION for energy in one year! Now Fastow's out of prison and lecturing on business ethics.

Re: Last Film Watched?

I've seen at least one reviewer say this is one of the top 5 Bond films ever. Even though I'm a fan, I'm no Bond aficionado but still, I don't think I'd go that far. That said, the opening sequence will keep you on the edge of your seat. It's not non-stop action from there but it does live up to the formidable Bond legacy, at least from my perspective. The way the Bond theme kicks in at key points during the film is a nice touch and helps to amp up already exhilarating scenes. The ending is as nearly as breathtaking as the beginning of the film if not a little overlong and overblown. Still, very worthy viewing for Bond/action movie fans.

I actually enjoyed that movie. It was a great 90 mins, where you could sit back and laugh, and not have to think or anything.

I took my grandaughter to see "Frankenweenie". Animated, filmed in
black and white, and makes a lot of references to classic horror films.
Cute film.

Re: Last Film Watched?

Reviews from critics seem to be pretty mixed on this but most people I know that have seen it, loved it. It's not like a bad review was going to stop me from seeing it anyway. I opted for the 2-D experience and was not disappointed. Yes, it's long (just as the others were) and there's some moments where the story moves pretty slow but there were plenty of intense action sequences to make up for any lulls. I haven't read the book since high school and even then, I don't think I ever finished it. Probably need to revisit it just to compare it to the movie.

We saw Django Unchained tonight.
Wow! Awesome movie!
From the acting to the scenery, the story, the dialog, and let's not forget the carnage.
Definitely want to see it again. Had some sad moments and even quite a few hilarious moments.
One of the best of the year for me.

Re: Last Film Watched?
In Django Unchained there is a scene where's Foxx's character is at the bar next to another guy who asks his name.

It turns out that is a cameo appearance by Franco Nero, the original Django from 1966.
I've never even heard of that movie till today but I watched it tonight. It's a Spaghetti Western and it's kinda cheesey but I liked it.
The story has nothing to do with Django Unchained although Unchained uses the same opening theme song.

Re: Last Film Watched?
This might be a little cumbersome, but I've been on a kick the last few days and I may or may not have borrowed a friend's Oscar screening copies, which lends me the luxury of being able to watch things on my insomniac's schedule.
Django Unchained - I honestly didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. The style Quentin Tarantino employs to showcase the violence made it less gut wrenching and more watchable for me. I walked away a much bigger Tarantino fan than I was going into it.
Silver Linings Playbook - I'd been looking forward to this since last summer. I loved the movie. The ensemble cast was phenomenal and the age difference between Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper isn't distracting like I was afraid it would be. They both did superb jobs.
Argo - Oh my sweet baby Jesus, I loved this movie. Ben Affleck's Best Motion Picture Golden Globe was well deserved. Even thought I knew the story behind it and the subsequent ending, this managed to pull me to the brink so many times. It was fantastically written and directed.
Next on the list Zero Dark Thirty, The Sessions and Flight.

I saw Jack Reacher.
As a fan of the books, I am happy with the way the movie turned out, with one exception. Tom Cruise does not fit the description of Reacher. Too old, too short.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Cruise hater. I think he's a very talented actor. And his performance was pretty good. But anyone who has read the books will have difficulty seeing him in the role, before viewing or after.

Re: Last Film Watched?
There was a review of Jack Reacher in New York magazine a couple of weeks ago, it has one of the greatest lines I've ever seen in a movie review. "Cruise underplayed beautifully in the last Mission: Impossible picture, but Jack Reacher looks like a vanity license plate on a car only an a$$hole would drive."CaptainP wrote:I saw Jack Reacher.

I saw Zero Dark Thirty tonight, terrific movie. I wasn't familiar with most of the cast except Kyle Chandler, Harold Perrineau (Michael from Lost) and an almost unrecognizable James Gandolfini. I thought Jessica Chastain, who I had never heard of before, was great.
