We are in the same boat/plane/St Barts literally with Scarlet and phriends this year. If this was kicked forward for 2013 we would consider it. We have always wanted to do this but next year won't work for us.

What about Conch Charters http://www.conchcharters.com/ or Horizon or TMM, which I've heard mentioned on these boards before. Their prices are much less then moorings.

Our first sailing trip to the BVI was with a less-costly, lesser-known charter company. (Note: It was not any of the ones you mention howver.)

The boat was old, not as clean as I like (we spent the first day under sail cleaning it ourselves), and had numerous pieces of equipment on board break during our week's sailing that required we wait until the company sent a mechanic each time which delayed our travel plans. Many of these "discount" companies take used boats from firms like the Moorings and Sunsail (the 2 biggest). Both Moorings and Sunsail (http://www.sunsail.com) generally maintain their yachts very well, but remove boats from the primary fleet after 5 years or so.

Moorings and Sunsail both are first class operations and, unfortunately, you pay for that. We've used the Moorings twice in the BVI and Sunsail numerous times while chatering the Chesapeake Bay. We've never been disappointed with the boats, the service, or the experience.

That said, we all have to make vacation decisions within our own family budget. Just keep in mind that, when chartering in the BVI, like most things, you usually get what you pay for.......

We sailed down in the BVI's in June. We had a huge flotilla of 8 boats (6 same company, 2 rogue boats). It was $1500 per person not including the airfare and hotel stays at the beginning/end of the trip. It was a blast, I would love to go back.

We had dinner last night with our best friends. We have vacationed with them to the BVI, Bermuda, Key West, and numerous other destinations (including Jimmy Buffett concerts!). We just travel well together and always have a great time.

Anyway, my buddy Jim will turn 60 March 2012 and, to celebrate that "bend in life", they want my wife and I to go with them on a cruise to the southern Caribbean that same month. Possible stops would be St. Martin, Antigua, St. Lucia, and Barbados (sailing from San Juan, PR). If this trip becomes a reality, I'm sorry to report, we would not also be able to consider a charter sail the BVI in 2012, too. I'd like to, believe me, but I doubt the budget would allow it..... :(

I'll keep everybody posted....... :pirate:

Perhaps you could convince them to go on a charter to the BVI instead

Or could we all wait just one more year? 2013......Much of this will depend on one of our girls getting off the college payroll for us.

:o hmmm choice between your own boat with four other people going where you want and being drug around the Caribbean with thousands of other people on a giant ship where you always create a crowd. Your friends must be the more civilized types. :P I have a lot of friends who LOVE cruise ships too.

 you can prolly tell, big cruise ships aren't my favorite way to travel. But hopefully we can make 2013 work if 2012 doesn't pan out.
