Hi Jimmy. It's me again, the surfpirate. Remember me? I wrote to you last year and again this year
asking you to ignore Funkhouse9 and his ridiculous campaign asking you to play Nautical Wheelers at the Nissan/Lube Pavilion shows.
Appreciate your listening to me on that ... shows how tight we are (the surfing brotherhood remains strong).
Right. Whatever. Anyhoooo, I'm here now with a serious request. I really, really really would like to hear you play Waltzing Matilda
at your Australian show(s). It's such a great song and those nutty down under types seem to like it.
Drop anything you want to from the current set list to make room. That'd be great.
Thanks! "the" surfpirate
p.s. If covering Waltzing Matilda seems a bit much, perhaps dust off Nautical Wheelers and play it down under,
'cause, you know .... it would really p*** off the funky house dude. Thanks.

Waltzing Matilda is one of those rare songs my father liked, and one of two that he used to sing, so I have very fond childhood memories of that song.

Slim Dusty singing that (with 100,000 backup singers) at the closing ceremonies of the Sydney Olympics was a great TV moment.

Very nice idea. Request noted.
Re: Waltzing Matilda request for January Sydney Show
if someone can put the youtube on the page I would appreciate it.
Great song can't imagine a Buffett cover
I surspect SP wasn't referring to "Band Played Waltzing Matilda", but simply "Waltzing Matilda"...at least that's the way I took it.
Oh, that would make more sense
A song about a tramp who steals a sheep and then kills himself, far more upbeat

This thread got me thinking (I know, scary) to what the song is about.
This is from Wiki---and I know, it isn't always true
wiki wrote:"Waltzing Matilda" is Australia's most widely known bush ballad, a country folk song, and has been referred to as "the unofficial national anthem of Australia".[1]
The title is Australian slang for travelling by foot with one's goods in a "Matilda" (bag) slung over one's back.[2] The song narrates the story of an itinerant worker, or swagman, making a drink of tea at a bush camp and capturing a sheep to eat. When the sheep's ostensible owner arrives with three police officers to arrest the worker for the theft (a crime punishable by hanging), the worker commits suicide by drowning himself in the nearby watering hole, and then goes on to haunt the site.
The original lyrics were written in 1887 by poet and nationalist Banjo Paterson. It was first published as sheet music in 1903. Extensive folklore surrounds the song and the process of its creation, to the extent that the song has its own museum, the Waltzing Matilda Centre in Winton, Queensland.
Whoa---not the perky song I thought it was

Nothing's ever stopped Buffett from butchering a cover before.
