A Christmas Card ......

Post by surfpirate »

This exactly, and I mean almost exactly captures what I remember as a kid growing up
in the 1960s. The crew cut haircut kid in the video and the young girl with the pixie cut hair
remind me so much of my sister and I at that age in the sixties.

The video clips, the home, the Christmas Tree with tinsel, the old black and white TV set,
the Dad, the Mom, the new bicycles, toys and dolls at Christmas .....

.... and the VietNam Conflict (War) was on the news ....... every ...... single ...... night.

oh my! I especially remember those "light bars" (like airplane landing lights) that they used with the movie cameras that made everyone squint.

I got one of those Chatty Cathy dolls with the ring in her back one year.

My brother was a part of that 'lottery', and didn't get chosen.

Loved the video clips. Also similar to my childhood. :)

I couldn't watch all of it. Too many memories, good and bad, and teardrops are not good for a computer.

I agree. I've been especially weepy today. My little brother had a bike and pajamas and the Rockem Sockem Robots just like that...I miss him.

Thanks SP for the post - lots of memories there....especially the Rock-em-Sock-em Robots!

The theme does remind me of what makes me sad for our kids today. I grew up with all the Vietnam news but way to young to be concerned about a draft. My uncle was drafted but failed his physical which I do remember being a very stressful and tense moment in my family's life. A sad irony to that story is that his son, my cousin, was killed a year ago in Afghanistan. With that said, looking back, I would have hoped that my kids wouldn't have known the constant war and conflict many of us knew but considering we've been actively engaged in wars since the early 90's...that's about all they know about foreign policy. Didn't mean to bring a downer to this post but that's what was on my mind!

Have a very Merry Christmas all and hope you get that wagon, Connect 4, Easy Bake Oven, or bike you asked Santa for...... :D

Not always....My brother went to Viet Nam, returned and raised up three wonderful boys.

You can still get a lot of cool retro toys to this day. (even if only the adults want to play with them :P )

I never had an Easy Bake, but the neighbor had a vacu form that we loved playing with.

Even with all of the troubles, I have very fond memories of growing up in that era.

So do I , Nancy....We played outside until after dark, until the "Kid Caller" rang out....Dad attached a boat's foghorn on the side of the roof...
We never locked our front door....
or our cars.

I had an EZ Bake..and the 1st Barbie, and the 1st Chatty Cathy...too bad I actually played with them and didn't keep them to sell now...

Thanks, SP, for a look in to my past... 8)

What Connie said - thanx, SP.

Lots of memories, some good and some sad, but good to feel all of them again.

Thanks Surf, I loved it. My brothers and I got bikes one year, it was great. We couldn't wait to ride them. Although one of my brother's is no longer with us, it still reminds me of that wonderful memory :)

This made me think of the 1st year my Dad had to have one of those Silver Christmas trees...with the revolving light that threw the colors on it? I was sooooooo disappointed in not having a real tree...and there was this huge pile of aluminum foil in our "Florida Room"...Anyone have one of those growing up? Must have been the mid 60's? I remember Santa brought me my first very own "stereo" for my room that Christmas! 8)

Thanks for the memories, SP. I had both an EZ Bake and Rockem Sockem Robots. I had a haircut just like that little girl and my Mom looked a lot like that Mom back then. Oh, for simpler times....

Connie I remember those horrible trees.. luckily we never had one but I do remember one year having one of those flocked trees with white suff all over it and it pink balls of all things... That was a bad memory!! I still have my one and only stereo.. It is up in the attic (don't ask me why) I wonder if it still works??? Might have to get it down when the Christmas stuff goes back up!! Much prefer the green trees.. Growing up in Chicago it was so much fun looking at Christmas lights up against the snow and we had these big old Christmas bulbs outside and on the tree!! Fond memeories.. Thanks SP!!

They were horrible! I remember crying when Daddy brought it home...

Now, they're "Retro" and quite popular judging from what I read....Some things from the past need to stay in the past...
We only had it one year and then donated it to my school for one of the classrooms...Of course, I ended up in Sister Assumpta's class the next year, and the stupid silver tree again...

That stereo? With the detachable speakers? Daddy gave me Petula Clark's "Downtown" album....and Aunt Billie gave me one of the very first Rolling Stones album...After that, she was my favorite Aunt...(out of all the Aunt's who weren't really Aunts, but just family friends... )

Yep...very good memories there... 8)
