I guess I'm old school, I kind of enjoy my time in the car just sort of listening to music and watching the sights go by. Can't think of any text that I would want to send or receive that couldn't wait until I get where I'm going.

Having been involved in Rescue Services and Fire Brigades over many years, it is very simple for me.

If you use a mobile (cell) phone, in any way while driving you are a deadset, A Grade MORON.

You do not deserve the privilege of being allowed to drive on public roads.

Having seen the results of inattention on the roads too many times I would be happy if when you went to start the engine a system would detect the I.F. emissions from the cell phone receiver and disabled the vehicle until the phone is removed or switched off.

Adverts will do nothing. Lives are lost every day.

No excuses, no "but I was only...." you use a phone in a car, you never drive again.

Texting has its uses. For instance, my boys can't pick up a call at work. Neither can I. And our breaks/lunch don't coincide. So if there's any coordination to be done, texts can be left for the next opportunity to read them even though we can't talk because of schedule differences.

Everyone should know HOW to text, even if they generally don't. When phone lines are jammed in an emergency or signal strength is low, a text will often go through when a call won't. I was in Hawaii last year during the (very small, thank God) tsunami. My phone call to the family got cut off and then all the lines were overloaded. My family was freaking out but I was able to get a text through telling them everything was fine.

Other times when texting is useful:

- You're not sure whether the other person is available but want to check in with them. Texting is a bit less intrusive than calling them, and as SGH points out, doesn't have to be answered immediately.
- You're in a REALLY LOUD BAR and you wouldn't be able to hear someone on the other end of the phone. Y'know...like almost any bar in Key West? :)

It's not so useful for long, involved conversations. But it's worthwhile.

not to be any more of a ba$tard than normal, but I think you're a bit strong there, mate. Having eliminated sabre-tooth tigers, most pandemic-sized diseases, and natural disasters out of the methods to cull the herd of defective genes (which probably accounts for a huge uptick in the volume of stupid seen every day), cell phones are our last line of defense against a median IQ of 50.

Do I text while I drive? no. Do I talk on my phone? Yes, tho most of the time I am driving is not NYC rush-hour gridlock. Maybe someday over a beer, I'll tell you about the first time I read "Red Storm Rising".

No worries Ring, I look forward to that beer.

Not unlike you I am quite Darwinian in my outlook, the problem is, like drunk drivers and moronic hoons, the outcome is rarely limited to the inhabitants of the shallow end of the gene pool. It unnecessarily involves "joe the plumber" or "betty the teacher" innocently going about their business - These are the people we need in the gene pool.

But I must take my own advice (posted in the "That Sucked" thread) and lighten up. As it is late July and as cold as it gets here, I think I shall turn up the heat, crack a bottle of cool climate Rosé and blast the neighbours with January's Sydney Opera House concert.

PHINS UP

I will agree that the only drawback with karma coming due on idiot drivers is that there are not enough one-car, single-passenger rollovers to reward said drivers for years of dim, lack-witted driving.

It's funny how direct connect is dying out.
We're going backwards, from talking to texting..............next homing pigeons.
Proud non texter here....and I rarely talk while driving...hell I can't even hear in my Jeep.
My brother is a text zombie.
He says texting is great because you have time to think about the lie you're telling.

Unless someone is telling you, or texting you, that your car is on fire...most everything could wait until you get where you're going.

I hate talking on the phone, which is why I love texting. But no, I don't do it while I am driving anymore. I have had some random texts come through lately that completely crack me up. To the point I am thinking that we might need to create a "TWI" thread and load it up with random BN text we have received.

Thank you....I am a phone hater as well, I have a weird phone anxiety. I can talk to a person, face to face, all day long....put a phone in my hand and I freeze....I HATE talking on the phone.
I carried on a text conversation with a wrong number the other night....I thought it was one of my jewelry customers......it wasn't.
