Thank you....I am a phone hater as well, I have a weird phone anxiety. I can talk to a person, face to face, all day long....put a phone in my hand and I freeze....I HATE talking on the phone.
I carried on a text conversation with a wrong number the other night....I thought it was one of my jewelry customers......it wasn't.
was he cute? :D

so how do you feel about a grizzled 42 year old guy with poor judgement in clutch situations sending you pictures of himself from his phone?

I got a 'wrong' text the other day. The person wanted to know what our hours of operation were, they thought they were texting their dog groomer...?!? I texted back and said they had the wrong person. They then texted back and said 'oh, I guess you can't help me then?' I texted and told them I could try, but they may not like the results. We had a couple more exchanges. Anyway, just found it funny. I, too, am one of those who hates talking on the phone and avoid it if at all possible.

And just for the record, I wasn't texting while driving....nor at the movie theater.

Just to put things in perspective, though I don't recall there being nearly the fuss over the use of CB radios as there is now with cellphones. As we've discussed, I'm sure that's because it takes more of your attention to operate a cellphone, especially if you're texting.

It's funny, I used to love to talk on the phone as a kid, now I can't stand it. But back in those days, phone conversations were relatively private. It ticks me off beyond belief that I have to be subjected to a person's random phone conversation no matter where I am, simply because they think they are too important to not take or make a call until they are alone. Where it really kills me is at the nature preserves or similar where I go go enjoy nature, take photos, look for birds and wildlife...and here comes someone yacking away as loud as can be on their cellphone. One of these days I will grab one from someone and throw it in the nearest lake or pond. And usually these same people have kids who are running amok and terrorizing people and wildife alike. Stay the F home if you're gonna do that.

That's where texting comes in handy for me. If a situation or something reminds me of someone, I can fire off a text while not broadcasting that info to everyone around me. I'm not a mad texter, but I can occasionally get on a roll and have a long conversation, lol. I do try to be considerate of the people around me, whether talking or texting...wish others would do the same.

I've mentioned my other issue with cellphones/texting/iPods etc in other threads. We've created a society of victims. Take a look around you someday...how many folks are so busy talking or texting or listening to music that they have NO IDEA what is going on around them? They're the perfect bait...a completely vulnerable target. I really try to be safety conscious and have situational awareness, it drives me nuts to see people setting themselves up like that. Please talk to you family and kids about it, don't let them ( or you) become a victim.

Ok, the ipod...that I am very guilty of. If I am reading a book, and don't have music in my ears, my brain gets the best of me. If I am walking the dogs, or walking in the preserve in Wells, I have the ipod on. Ie...I want to be left alone. During my lunch breaks at work...yup, wearing the ipod. I love listening to music and the release it gives me, and can't wait to get my new ipod touch! And thanks to SL, I went for the largest model Apple makes.

This is interesting, and according to some recent research, worrying.

The research (I can't find the reference ATM) said, in a nut shell, we need times of silence and inactivity. These periods are used by the ol' noggin to to explore ideas, sort out the mess of information that we get overloaded with, and to allow the mind to digest and process what is important, what is creative, and what needs to be worried about.

I know that it takes me three or four days to wind down and get into island mode, except when I visit my 'One Particular Harbour*' where I can become 'ex-pat' in hours and 'Ni-Vanuatu' in a day.

Unfortunately, in our modern world, these quiet periods are labelled as "boredom". What we are really doing is just loading more information on top of the jumbled mess.

One interesting snippet was to ask why people feel more relaxed and 'grounded' after sitting alone on a beach or under a tree in the bush. Their thesis was that the brain had time to sort out the mess and do a spring clean. After which the brain can relax and thereby the whole being can relax and become calmer.

A thought occured, maybe they just described "Margaritaville". Maybe this is why we ache to sit under a palm, on a beach letting the rest of the world 'go to hell in a handbasket'?

Could Jimmy really be a scientist, using us as guinea pigs? [smilie=beadygrinner.gif]

I listen to various music for various reasons. If I am alone somewhere...beach, park, walking, I am doing it for a reason. And the music I listen to, will help me work through things...help me through it if you will. If I need to work off some steam, I go to the beach, and the music ha that vibe. If I am having a crappy mental day, my music will empower me to get through it. For example...if I am missing my grandmother or my dog, I will play the music that reminds me of them to get comfort. Once whatever is bugging me is out of my system, it is all good. I am very OCD, my brain doesn't take breaks well.

I do agree that we need times of silence and solitude.....I need at least fifteen minutes a day.....just quiet...no music, no nothing....sometimes just me and a cup of coffee...sometimes just sitting out on the back patio watching the birds or the dogs. Usually first thing in the morning and right when I get home from work....take off my shoes and just sit in delicious solitude for a little while.

Since I'm apparently still in denial (because I have yet to buy myself a set of bifocals), I would have to take my glasses off to read any text I receive, and to send a text. And, since I do believe there is a constitutional amendment that states "MRS. JOSEPH'S SON GARRY WILL NOT REMOVE HIS GLASSES WHILE OPERATING A MOTOR VEHICLE" (if there isn't, there should be), I couldn't send or receive texts while driving even if I wanted to.

On the day job, when in the office, constant socialization
in the shop, constant socialization around the customers, especially when two or more regulars are in and the conversation is flying.

yes, solitude is a great thing.

Go get bifocals, Garry.
You might be surprised what you are missing [smilie=cheeky-grin.gif]

I'll eventually get them, Molly. In addition to being "in denial", I think the biggest factor as to why I haven't gotten them yet is because both Lenscrafters and Pearle Vision are at the Coral Ridge Mall. I just don't enjoy being in a mall, not even for two minutes. The glasses I have work great, so (for now) I'll just be content with them. Not that I'd text & drive if I DID have bifocals, I wouldn't.
While I'm thinking about it, there IS an eye center at Wal Mart. HMMMMMM! [smilie=huh-ani.gif]
