With the justified screaming about ticket prices and ticket brokers this little story seemed appropriate to post here.
I heard this morning that Kenny Chesney was releasing a sunglass collection with $10 of each sale going to the Coastal Conservation Association. Sounded like a good cause so I checked it out - I'd spring for a $40 pair. Prices range from $150 to $279. Say What? The best sunglasses I ever buy are cheap sunglasses - like $10 at Walmart. ZZ Top was right!
Seems about the going price for sunglasses these days. I broke my polarized sunglasses and have been looking for a replacement pair for my Hawaii trip. Apparently there's no such thing as cheap polarized sunglasses. REI's website said they had a brand for $25.00 but they didn't have them in store. And I have to try them on, since most seem to be made for melon heads. I ended up with a pair for $50, but I'm still looking to see if I can find any that are cheaper. Given the rate I seem to go thru sunglasses when I travel, a few backup pairs might be in order for a trip this long.
At least KC is donating $10 bucks and not just a buck. Of course if he only sells a couple pairs, that won't help too much.
Santa Wayne gave me the suggestion of looking in the fishing dept of wallyworld. Just not sure I can get there before I leave, and not sure they'd be small enough to fit me. I found a fun pair (not polarized) at Marshall's yesterday for $2.99....I won't care if I lose or break those, plus I picked up another regular pair that were cheap too. That way I can take those to the beach and not my good ones. Am I the only one who goes away for a month and packs 4 pairs of sunglasses?
No you're not the only one who take multiple pairs of sunglasses. When we went on our back to back Panama cruises and were gone for a couple months we did the same thing.
Even on the shorter trips I never take less than two- three pair.
Hey I use them and I don't have to pay excessive prices cause I'm in a port or have to buy them on the ship.
I lived by the mantra of *cheap sunglasses* for decades.
When I got my lasik eye surgery several years back,
I finally sprung for a nice ($$) pair of Maui Jim's.
These things last, are the most durable comfortable shades ever ....
and you can get replacement lenses whenever you need them
(about every couple of years) for $60.
I'm with you SP! I value my eyesight more than just about anything else and it's only the best for my old orbs! I wore RayBan Aviators for about 20 years and then about 3 years ago a poolside vendor in Waikiki tried to sell me some Maui Jims. He sold me on them, but I waited til I got back to Seattle and bought them from my optician... I wanted to buy them locally in case I had any problems. I dropped them and chipped a lens - sent 'em back and wham! a new pair in about a week, no charge! I now have 3 pairs, including 2 pairs of Maui Jim Readers (basically bifocals) so that I can read while relaxing in the sun . . .
I haven't had much use for them in Seattle in quite some time, but in two more weeks..... ALOHA!

That's good to know. I paid for a prescription pair of MJ's with transition lenses that just make me dizzy. Readers will work for me. Besides, some would say one looks pretty dorky wearing polarized sunglasses with cheaters tucked underneath while tying on a fly, standing in a river. I think it demonstrates creativity.
Yeah, but when you lose the expensive ones (or have them stolen) it really hurts. My cheap ones are all very dark, and I still have one expensive pair that I'll wear everywhere but to the beach. Plus I'll be with 2 very little kids...and you know what they do to glasses. If I find the perfect pair of expensive sunglasses I'll spring for them, but I have yet to find a pair that fits well. And it will be awhile anyway...the new camera lens was more important.

You? Dorky? Never!!
Back in college I had a pair of prescription Vaurnet sunglasses. We were at a restaurant seated near the kitchen, and I had put my sunglasses on the table. We left, and I made it as far as the hostess desk before I realized the glasses were still on the table. Went back and they were GONE. No one else was seated in the area and the table had been partially cleared, and yet the staff claimed no one had seen them. The manager had the nerve to say I must have lost them somewhere else. Not a smart thing to do with a college kid...I passed the word at school and many stopped going there. They went out of business some months later...I'd like to think we had a hand in that.

So you don't scrimp when it comes to lenses for your cameras, but go "dime store" for your eyes?

FYI..
For those who like Maui Jim's..
Maui Jim makes Tommy Bahama's glasses... Lots of times available from Marshalls,TJ Maxx etc.
Even at TB they are cheaper than MJ's...

So why are $200 glasses going to protect my eyes better? Are they using top secret materials...or just making you pay for the name?
BTW, my cheap sunglasses weren't cheap to begin with...I just buy them at cheap places.

Just like camera lenses . . . better optics, better UV filtering, better polarization. Most I've paid was $160.
(I too have spent way more on a camera lens....)

I just paid *huge* bucks for prescription sun glasses. Only $99 for the frame but the lenses were over $500... And they can't even get my eyes to 20/20 any more..... Fortunately, I'm blind as a bat so they pretty much stay on my face, without a whole lot of chance to lose them or sit on them.

As long as you have good UV filtering you don't *need* polarization, no, but if you're on the water or around snow or ice, it makes a WORLD of difference in your ability to see.
