Saturday's full moon will be the biggest since 1993.

As rare as it is, it may be worth a look. Miss it and you'll have to wait until 2029 to see it again.

May have to break out the telescope if the weather permits.

The moon has actually gotten smaller since the late 1960s. (The astronauts kept bringing pieces of it back here.)

I'm sure more has been added over the years though.

We're gonna take out the telescopes and the cameras. hope it's clear. It's 14% bigger and brighter, so it should make for some good shots.

Yes.. a springtime full moon makes some really high tides.
I noticed today driving through downtown that the Hillsborough river was way up.

I'm sure it'll be beautiful but wasn't there at least a couple of these instances in recent years that we were told we wouldn't see again anytime soon? I know I can think of at least one that happened sometime in December of 08.

Hey! This could be serious sh!t!!

"Yesterday we wrote about former USGS geologist Jim Berkland’s prediction of an earthquake on the west coast during March’s Super Moon. Berkland based part of his prediction on unusual animal behavior prior to earthquakes. Our original source for the post, an article at Before It’s News, ‘Earthquake Predicted for California This Saturday. Saturday, March 19, and March’s Super moon."

That could really screw up our concert schedule, AGAIN....

I also remember back in the late 1970s some of the same so-called experts were anticipating something that they dubbed the "Jupiter Effect". The theory was that in 1982 three or four planets were going to be lined up on the same side of the sun as and in conjunction with Earth, and the effect of the combined gravitational pull of these planets was going to wreak havoc on the globe and trigger earthquakes, floods, and vulcanism.

Didn't happen; although a couple of writers later claimed that the effect actually took place (despite the lack of planetary alignment) earlier than predicted, and was responsible for the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens.

This guy predicted the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989, the World Series quake in San Francisco. He said you need to look at other natural forces out of wack, like the big fish kill in SO CAL where millions of deep living fish swam into a marina and died, whales and dolphins beaching themselves and dogs and cats running away.

We're all hoping he's wrong too.

As I previously mentioned, I thought this sounded familiar. This article is from 2008:

Year's Biggest Full Moon Friday Night

space.com – Thu Dec 11, 1:45 pm ET AP – The Moon illuminated in close proximity Venus during a spectacular display of celestial rare phenomenon … The full moon Friday night will be the biggest one of the year as Earth's natural satellite reaches its closest point to our planet.

Earth, the moon and the sun are all bound together by gravity, which keeps us going around the sun and keeps the moon going around us as it goes through phases. The moon makes a trip around Earth every 29.5 days. But the orbit is not a perfect circle.

The moon's average distance from us is about 238,855 miles (384,400 km). Friday night it will be just 221,560 miles (356,567 km) away. It will be 14 percent bigger in our sky and 30 percent brighter than some other full moons during the year, according to NASA.

Tides will be higher Friday night, too. Earth's oceans are pulled by the gravity of the moon and the sun. So when the moon is closer, tides are pulled higher. Scientists call these perigean tides, because the moon's closest point to Earth is called perigee. The farthest point on the lunar orbit is called apogee.

It really doesn't look all that much bigger than normal here. Although it does seem like I can see the dark markings more clearly than usual.

Drove down the road a bit to get a good view. We had a great orange color as it rose, it was a very clear night. Now 30 minutes later, it's quite hazy.

There were some people with tripods. I think I need to find a cheap one so I don't have to use a freezing rail. Like I did last night. Without gloves or mittens.

This one isn't so great but it was one of the first photos of the night

Jones Beach would have been the best place to see the big moon last night. Not much in the way like from Manhattan.
