Like rock bands or performers such as Springsteen, Jovi, U2, Metallica, Dave Matthews, REM, Van Halen, etc. were when they were young and making an impact? Again, in 2011 (and for the decade prior) I just don't see it.
The best I can do is name some of my current favorite artists. I have no idea of how influential they are on a national or international scale though as influence is not something I gauge my listening habits by, nor can I accurately gauge just how influential they are as that takes years to determine. I am also not sure of ages here either but with few exceptions these are all relatively new bands. I will say that despite the current state of radio, I still discover music through word of mouth (which is how I first found out about Buffett and scores of other artists). I also listen to lots of radio whether it be XM or stations I listen to through iTunes (such as the aforementioned KEXP). Other outlets include messageboards, blogs, email lists and FB where I'm often led to check out new artists via YouTube. In addition to that, I attend a lot of live shows by local, regional and national/international touring artists.

The Decemberists, the War On Drugs, Megafaun, Mumford & Sons, Kurt Vile, Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, Elf Power, the Roadside Graves, the Gaslight Anthem, Two Cow Garage, Hayes Carll, Mount Moriah, Ryan Gustafson, Tift Merritt, The Light Pines, The Love Language, Ryan Adams, Donna the Buffalo, J. Roddy Walston & the Business, The Rosebuds, Chatham County Line, Dead Confederate, Samantha Crain and Nada Surf. I could probably name 100 more but will spare you. Out of those, the one most fitting the bill is probably J. Roddy Walson of J. Roddy Walston & the Business. To describe him as "charismatic" is great understatement. He steals the show without really meaning to or by making an attempt to be cocky. He's just got what it takes to front a kick ass rock n' roll band such as The Business:

These bands aren't really my cup of tea but they're worth mentioning as far as newer artists: The Black Keys, My Morning Jacket, the Raconteurs, Justin Townes Earle, Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, Ryan Bingham, The Hold Steady, Iron & Wine, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The National, Lucero, Those Darlins, American Aquarium and Band of Heathens. Again, I'm sure there's plenty more that simply aren't coming to mind right now.

OK, let's simplify this....do you want bands from the 90's, or do you want artists under 40? There are some good newer bands, but do they live up to the Rolling Stones, van Halen etc? Who knows....they're too new to know if they'll be able to sustain their music for a long period of time as the aforementioned bands were able to do. I'm sure there were people saying Van Halen, Bon Jovi or U2 couldn't live up to the Stones or The Who back when they were new bands.
One new band that I really like is the Killers. I saw them do a concert on Palladia, and they kicked ass....I would go see them. Same goes for the Strokes, who remind me of the Knack. Another good band is Jet, and a young band that reminds me of Led Zepplin, Wolfmother.

A band that I REALLY surprised no one has mentioned, as they are probably one of the best formed in the last 20 years....The Foo Fighters. Personally, I like what Dave Grohl has done with them much more than what he did while in Nirvana, but will give Nirvana their due, they did help put an end to the hairbands of the 80's.

For the under 40, I think Matthew Bellamy, age 32 does a pretty good job as frontman for the band Muse. I saw them about a year and a half ago here in Houston and was a little blown away by the energy, to put it mildly. :D

From Wikipedia:
In the January 2010 edition of Total Guitar, Bellamy was named Guitarist of the Decade and was proclaimed to be "the Hendrix of his generation". In the Guinness Book of World Records 2010, Bellamy is credited as holding the world record for most guitars smashed on a tour. His record, 140, was set during the Absolution Tour. In April 2010, Bellamy was named the eighth best front man of all time by the readers of Q. In December 2010, readers of MusicRadar voted Bellamy the 9th Greatest Lead Singer of all time.

While I understand it's not quite everyone's cup of tea, I dig it! 8)

read back. I mentioned the Foo Fighters and I love them as performers. Dave Grohl is the most influential rock star of my life time - easily. (Currently he is in his 40's so my search continues).
